4 lo in a high mileage 3rd gen

My 97 will shift between 1-2 if I put the shifter into 2, it just wont go past 2. On trails in CO there are plenty of times where getting into 3rd gear are still good in 4lo, I still don't rev high so no issues there. Also there was a thread on here recently where a guy was talking about doing some extensive wheeling in 4hi and it caused his transmission to overheat a little bit. I feel when you (if you) are going slow enough to use even overdrive in 4lo it is still easier on the tranny than making it crawl up steep inclines in 4hi in 1st gear.

All trails etc. may vary though. The only thing I use 4hi for is when it snows and I need the extra traction on the regular roads/highways.

Same here, mine definitely does not start out in 2nd just because that's where the shifter is at. And yes the shifts are pretty damn abrupt from 1-2 in low range.

Yeah i use 4 lo when I know a wheel will get off the ground or its steep or I am going downhill to let my engine slow me down vs my brakes if it's slick. I deal with mostly rock/gravel. The rocks have gravel on them so they're decently slick. I use 4-lo more than 4-hi

If I'm in 4Lo I'm also in 1st gear only, if I feel the need for second gear Lo probably isn't necessary.

Makes sense but sometimes you need lo and then the next obstacle you need it too but there is like 50 ft of 2WD trail and your tranny shifts it in second once you hit about 5-7 mph (which is actually really slow)

It won't shift out of first if you pull it all the way down though to L or 1, whatever we show. It'll rev a little high, but not more than like 3k or so. I don't think I've ever felt the 1-2 shift in Lo so I'm not sure how severe or abrupt it is.

Oh I am with you. I put it in 4-lo then 1st gear if I am hill climbing or whatever then if it's flat and simple I pop it up to 2nd then back down to 1st when i need it again.

4lo is actually easier on your transmission, helps to keep transmission temperature down while crawling. So yes, use it as much as you want, worse you'll see is a loss in fuel economy but who cares?

Agreed, I was in 4 lo, 1st gear crossing a pond & the resistance of the water was slowing me down. My rpms were getting too high & the torque would have just started spinning the tires in the mud so I had to slap the manual into second & power out of there.
