4 lo woes

Ok - I did a bad thing last night. On a dirt road I tried to go into 4 lo from high while in drive on my '15 TEP. There was some grinding and then strangely I was in drive, but it was like I was in neutral, no engagement from the transmission when applying the gas. When I shifted to park I got some high pitched grinding as well and after some tinkering with the 4 wheel drive lever and going between drive, neutral and park I finally got drive to engage and was on my way. But not after some nasty sounding grinds.

I realize my mistakes here, my question is did I mess anything up? The truck seems to be driving fine today and shifting in and out of 4 high is working. Any thoughts on what damage I may have done? Should I be concerned?

um, did you try 4lo? if you can get it in 4lo and back out you are probably fine

How fast were you going when you shift from hi to lo?

Haven't tried 4 lo again yet. Will do this later to see what happens...

It's fine.

There is a neutral position in the transfer case between 4lo and 4hi. The transmission should be in neutral and vehicle stopped (or <5mph) when shifting the transfer case into or out of 4lo or transfer case neutral.

You are probably fine. Like 4Surfin said, try to go 4lo again. If it engages, then you should be fine.

Shifted to 4 Lo on the fly

If the 4 lo still works then consider draining your transfer case oil through a fine sieve screen or paper filter. Look for metal shavings. If there's none and it still looks clean then you might be able to reuse the oil. But at this point it's easier and better to change the oil. Consider doing the same thing with the transmission oil. Use the correct oils for replacing the fluids so you maintain your warranty. You may need it. :tinfoil3:

Have you read the manual on shifting yet? As noted above, put the transmission in neutral, come to a stop or be rolling at a very slow crawl before shifting into 4 low.

Tried 4lo again tonight, the proper way, and all seems good.
