4 Low won't engage

Hi Guys Gals,

As the topic suggests, my 2007 4Runner will not go into 4 Low. It just beeps and beeps and beeps but does not engage. I've tried everything I can think of. No joy. 4High works no problem. Any idea on what the problem might be?

I've read the manual. Also, this is not first rodeo with a 4Runner. I had my 05 for 344,000 miles, multiple winters and never had a problem with 4Low. The manual doesn't diagnose mechanical problems. :bash:

I saw that you posted this a while ago and you might have already found a solution to the problem...but maybe check the Shift Actuator that is on the front side of the transfer case. I have heard that if you have the beeping and no 4LO like you are describing, the actuator could be bad and would need to be replaced. I learned that it is a common problem on the 03-04 (I have an 04), so since yours is newer, it may not be that. Anyways, I hope you found a solution!

Have you fixed the problem? Did it ever engage? Some have reported it WILL engages eventually, even after a few days. Just Keep at it. Once it does, use it often so it doesn't "freeze up" on you again. It's a shame they isn't any "lubrication" guideline on this. Failure of the actuator is usually caused by the white lithium grease (applied at the factory) drying up.

Yup, I kept at it. A couple of days later it just started working again. I've tested numerous times since then and it always engages with no problem. Weird. I guess it just likes to be used!

Last year I could not get into 4LO, but it worked once the temps came back up.
this year, same thing.
