4 pole flat trailer plug- how are you storing them? plug

Yesterday I got the Hopkins trailer harness kit installed in my 'runner. I was trying to figure out the neatest way to store the plug. I have it temporarily stuffed into the pass side frame rail, which will actually keep it dry and out of the way. I'm just wondering what other ways you guys have come up with to permanently mount it on the receiver.

The factory trailer wiring on my 4Runner mounts to the bottom of the cross-tube of the hitch, next to the receiver. I have since replaced the converter with a newer model (one that, you know, works) but I re-used the trailer end (soldered) so I could re-mount it.

Interested to see what people are doing besides it basically hanging there and getting all corroded and nasty. JUST replaced the one the PO had installed.

My connector is still good after all these years... but, California weather and all. You could put some dielectric grease in there to help keep things protected and make sure the cover stays on it when not in use.

On my sedan (Camry), I keep it up inside the trunk. On my Subaru wagons I have just hooked it around the hitch itself and kinda 'clipped' it in place using the wiring cover. That doesn't work if you are going to be off roading and possibly hitting the hitch. My '97 parts 4Runner had cut/ruined wires to the trailer light connector...

I use one of these. It's a magnetic clamshell that fits around the connector and it includes a cover for the plug.

This is how the newer 4Runners had the plug attached (like phattyduck stated), on the left side (the harness also came out from the left side). On my '97, the harness comes from the right side, and just dangles. I was going to use a bracket from the newer models (like shown below), but I'm reluctant to drill holes in the bumper, especially because I never tow .
