4 wheel drive

Hey guys so i finally got my rig back after swapping the rear housing, had to replace the abs sensors but everything went back in one piece.

First thing I noticed rides smoother. Now on to the bad. I press my 4 wheel drive button and I get the flashing lights wait a few minutes even roll forward but it doesn't seem to engage. When it finally does engage the truck doesn't feel right. Front wheels pushing along.

My initial reaction is that the gear ratios are off. I put a new east coast gear 4.10 in the back. I have an 01 without rear diff locker. I reviewed a million threads all saying I have the 4.10s. It's dark out now so I am waiting for the morning to run the spin test on the front. I would find it really hard to believe that I would have 4.30s in the front. I also put a rebuilt driveshaft in when I had my 3rd member out.


Any other suggestions on where to start.

Back story.

Rear end blew up on my truck. Blew the rear driveshaft out of yoke.
Got a new rear housing, driveshaft, and 3rd member.

Possible that transfer case got damaged?

If you replaced the rear with the wrong ratio, I don't see how that would have an affect on taking a long time to go into 4wd. If you put it in 4x4 and drive in a straight line, does the wheels chirp? This is a ghetto test but would still work

I swapped only my rear gears on my last truck, and it certainly increased the time required to shift into 4x4. There was no chirping noises either.
 
I am going to look into it more in the morning. Everything points that I have the right gears.
Not sure what else is involved, front diff was not engaged when rear end went so there's no chance that can be hurt. Transfer case only other part of equation.

The VIN tag is not an accurate predictor of the gear ratio for 2000s. More than one gear ratio can be found for several axle codes.

Paint codes on the nose of the pinion, if it's still visible, tooth counts, or counting pinion rotations with two tire rotations are the ways to tell what the ratio is.

A gear swap shouldn't have a thing to do with the time it takes for the transfer case to engage. The tcase doesn't have any idea what the gear ratio is in any rig.
 
I'm gonna take a look under the truck tomorrow at the front diff see if I can see any tags. If nothing I'll do the spin test.

Yes makes sense.
Since gears only thing that changed I have to believe my front isn't 4.10.

Anyone know of a front 3.9 for sale?

I tried out the 4 wheel drive again this morning. I cannot seem to get the lights to stop flashing this morning. I did try rolling forward and backward. When rolling forward it feels like the wheels are chirping which to me means the ratios are correct. The 4wd lights flash but do not stop but I do feel as if the front has power and the back is pushing it or dragging.

Hard to explain but I have to get it up and do the spin test to know what the front is since I ordered a 4.10 back I can almost be certain east coast gear didn't send me an incorrect ratio.

I think you need to do the spin test before you can say for certain your gears are correct. Once you know they are the same, then you can keep looking for the root cause of the problem.

There may be an issue with the TC since you said the rear end blew up and the driveshaft came out.

Driving forward in 4wd with incorrect gear ratios would make the tires chirp - They are trying to turn at different rates so the ones with the lower ratio would chirp. If they are the same ratio, driving in a straight line would produce no chirp.

At this point I have to agree with the above statement that the chirp I experienced is due to the ratios being different. I plan on doing the spin test this afternoon to be certain.

I am more curious to know if i can swap in any toyota front diff with 4.10s to match my rear, axle code A03A, can be found locally for about 200 what do you guys think?

In stead of the spin test twice, I would go direct to the issue. Put it on jacks, and put white tape right at the bottom of a front wheel and a back wheel. with 4wd engaged. Turn on engine in 4L first gear, and see if the tapes stay in sync. At night with a strobe light would be really cool.

With open differentials he'd probly need to stop one side of the truck's tires from spinning

Good point, but I've had mine doing that in the air and they both seem to spin at the same rate. If you had tape on both sides, and both were out of sync in the same direction, you'd have your answer. Likewise, if both were in sync, you would have no doubt. Mine is still on jacks, I'm going to test this and find out in the next few days. I have to test the brakes in the air anyway, before I set her down.

Stop making assumptions, especially when folks are showing you how to verify what you have.

Update being this.

This morning took apart my torn up old rear differential. Counted 41 teeth, with this in mind I decided to give the 4wd another try but keep the wheels straight and slow.

I first put the truck in neutral and then shifted the transfer case into neutral (keep in mind I have an 01 so it's the straight kind not the j kind). When I did this I noticed my 4wd lights came on like the truck thought it was in 4wd,but my button was not depressed. I immediately clicked the button in and shifted the transfer case back to 4 hi and the truck into drive. 8 rolled the truck forward and it sounded perfect no chrip or noises. So the 4wd was back working again.

I decided to click the button out and see if the 4wd would disengage. The lights flashed and I rolled forward, 4wd disengaged. Engaged the 4wd again and worked flawless. I also tried the 4 low, it took a bit longer to engage but engaged fine.

End of story truck sat for about 6 weeks maybe everything was lazy. Regardless back to working.
