4 wheel low with V8?

i was checking out their website (jeep) last night. they have also added some chincy lower air dam on the front that is removable for offroading to improve approach angles. it supposedly adds better fuel mileage on the highway. i can only imagine how long that thing would last before you strip a bolt hole or whatever connection piece breaks off and you're left holding in your hand with the "WTF do I do now look".

You're a weird guy...when someone argues with you with facts, you go run and cry foul! Where did the solid axle > IFS come from? So, it is not ok for me to mention BOF > Unibody? But it is OK for you to throw in SA > IFS??

Why did you buy a Toyota? Isn't reliability and durability the main reason? Isn't that a major plus when off-roading? Jeep GC's QDII system is hardly better than ATRAC...and a far cry from lockers. I agree with you...locker(s) is a good thing to have off-road, but ATRAC is not a limp system as you implied...because the Jeep GC's system is not any better. Now, if you talk about the Rubicon, then i can see your point better.

Lets take your 4runner. A stock 4th gen 4runner will be more off-road capable than your 4runner when it was stock. Yes, your 4runner is smaller and can fit into tighter places...but capability-wise, the 4th gen has a better crawl ratio, way better traction devices, and way better brakes. Oh yeah, the engine and torque is not even close.

Lets talk about YOUR 4runner right now. Your 4runner has a rear locker...wonderful! However, your front diff is open. A 4th gen 4runner has ATRAC on ALL 4 wheels. Now, if a 4th gen owner puts in a rear locker (like what you have done), then that 4th gen 4runner is better than your 4runner in off-road capability because it has traction control on the front axle (aka similar to LSD) while you're completely open.

Wow, calm down buddy. I think you took that wrong. You guys are so sensitive about your toyota's. Sorry I even bothered posting. Toyota ATRAC>everything else

hahahahahaha :crybaby:
you have said through this whole thing how great and capable your jeep was and how jeeps have solid axles, which they don't anymore. we are all entitled to our own opinions. obviously sending such high praise towards jeeps on a toyota site isn't going to fly well. we all think very highly of our trucks and each find them capable for our needs. if we don't, we make the modifications so that they are. no need to get upset and attack people.

There u go again...getting all nervous when people show u facts. I think that people with borderline knowledge should not make such bold statements...just an advice for you.

I dont remember saying how great jeep was. I mentioned in my personal experience and opinion that the jeep I owned(not a btand new jeep) outperformed my 04 4runner offroad. It seems like some of you cant handle that. Its a simple comparison and I really dont see why everybody wants to argue about it and act like nothing in the world could possibly beat Toyota. Whatever. Im done because obviously nobody wants to take their blinders off and admit their beloved Toyota might not be the best at everything. Have fun beating the dead horse.

Jesus christ, did you miss the point of this thread or what???? This is re****ed.

We're talking about vehicles similar to the 4Runner and the 4WD capabilities of them. I listed 3 vehicles I've owned/currently own and compared their performance.

99 Jeep Grand Cherokee

93 4Runner(locked rear)

04 4Runner

I've taken each of these vehicles on the same trails over and over again over the years. The 93 is far more capable than any of them. The 99 was VERY capable, but not as much as the 93. The 04 is the least capable of the 3. All I'm saying is ATRAC isn't even close to as capable as a vehicle with a locker and in my first hand experience it's not even as capable as some vehicles WITHOUT a locker. I'm not comparing the cost of ownership over 100k miles or the quality of the interior or the reliability over the life of the vehicle. WE ARE COMPARING THE OFF-ROAD CAPABILITIES.

1. ATRAC alone is not nearly as great as a locked differential

2. ATRAC did not outperform a vehicle with a different system(Grand Cherokee)

If you disagree with something, please feel free to explain why. Please don't put words in my mouth or start comparing unrelated aspects of the vehicles(reliability/durability).

Once again, this is first hand experience, NOT internet knowledge. I'm simply stating that ATRAC isn't as great as people are making it out to be. I have listed my reasons why and have first hand experience with each vehicle to back it up. If you have first hand experience that says I'm wrong, please explain.

In the sand, your tires are pretty much constantly slipping when under power. Does that mean ATRAC is constantly applying brake pressure to the wheels?

No, it's not that aggressive especially in high range. Even in low range I wouldn't expect it to engage in sand until the truck started to sink.

You asked?

Thought you knew why he had to buy a Toyota, so he can have a reliable truck to pull his JGC home and go get parts to fix it after every trip. Surely you dont expect him to walk to get parts every time? Those trannies are heavy dont you know?

Both my cousin & my sisters JGC got towed to scrap yards with under 100k & I'm pretty sure it takes a functional engine & trans to turn those fabulous lockers you spoke of? I think your putting good parts on the wrong truck? But' hey' different strokes, huh? & fyi, YUGO engine/trans fit perfect in a JGC as both models have AMC designs at heart so try that next round. Bet it boosts power too as the sludge is gone so be careful with it.

Whats a few yrs late between freinds....lol :boxer:

Looks like this was quite the contentious thread and it managed to get resurrected every couple of years.

I do wish the 4th gen 4Runner came with a selectable e-locker for the rear diff though, that would have made a good 4wd system into a great one.
