40 miles on odometer

If your car was a demo car, it'd have a lot more miles than that, but it might have been test driven by someone before. I wouldn't worry about it though.
My dads 05 had 15km (9mi) on the ODO when he bought it and the salesman told us nobody ever test drove it...
New cars always have a couple miles on the ODO since they have to drive them on and off the ship....

It varies. 40 miles = it's been testdriven, but NOT likely a demo or manager's car. The lower the mileage, the better of course, but 40 miles is not anywhere near where you have to worry about. If it has what you want, then i would not hesitate in buying it.
I would hesitate IF the odometer was above 100 miles. This probably means that it was driven to the dealership from somewhere else or been on the lot a very long time (unlikely with how fast Toyotas are selling these days). This is OK under most circumstances, but for my anal self, i will have dreams of some idiot not following proper break-in procedure or gunning it down the highway!
Here are my recent purchases and odometer reading:
2006 Toyota Highlander = 25 miles
2005 Toyota Corolla = 38 miles
2004 Mercedes G500 = 39 miles
2003 BMW M3 = 2 miles (yes, 2 miles!! Just off the delivery truck)
2002 Toyota 4runner = 9 miles
1997 Honda CRV = forgot

This post reminds me of a Nissan 4x4 I test drove in 1984 before buying my first truck. The test drive truck had 230 miles on it and sand in the bed. I forget exactly what the dealer's explanation was, but it went something like "we're out in the country and people go on long test drives." I didn't buy from that dealer.
I have to admit it was a standard transmission which I wasn't used to on the test drive. The only standard transmission I ever drove previously was a Trans Am with a 455 HO, which required a lot less rpms to get moving than that little 115 HP 4 cylinder. I got some pretty strange looks from the dealer during the ride.
Think about all the trips on and off truck trailers, ships, trains, and around parking lots to get to the final destination and it will be impossible to find one with zero miles.
Use your best judgement when picking out a new car, since your best judgement is really the only thing you can trust. If it doesn't feel right, move on.

I know how you feel, I like my new vehicles to have less than 25 miles on them. My 4runner had 1800 miles on it, the dealers finance guy drove it as his own for a couple of months before I bought it from under him. I got the Sport Edition for the same price as a SR5 so that was cool, but I'll always wonder how he drove it while he had it. He told me he baby'd it, but who knows. After I bought mine, he simply went out to the lot and drove away in another brand new one, says he hasn't had his own car in over 15 years, must be nice.
