400,000 Mile Club

The ball joint failures & pink milkshake happen on a such a small percentage of vehicles. We're all on this site because we're "car" guys & do the preventive maintenance. The average person never changes these things & thousands of 4Runners make it into the junk yards with over 300,000 miles without these items failing.

There are tons of these failures that also dont make the forums either. Just saying. These failures are happening more and more as time goes on and they get older. Buddy just had another ball joint failure. He has had 2 oems with 150k miles fail and one oem with around 15k miles on it.

Does he wheel it much, or mostly DD?
My original LBJs lasted 370k without issue, but mine is 99.9% asphalt driven.
I replaced them for peace of mind after reading all the posts about it on here, but without hard data there's no way to know the actual failure rate.

I changed my LBJ's last year for peace of mind at around 153,000 but they felt fine. This site got me so paranoid about them & I quit smokin' weed 20 years ago! Unlike that Creeper Guy!:becky:

What a coincidence! About 20 years ago there was suddenly an excess of weed floatin around...thankfully.

I am new to the forum and have a 1998 4 Runner that I bought new in 1998. It just turned over 424556 miles. original engine and transmission rebuilt last year even though it was still working. My truck has pulled innumerable 4500 # trailers loaded with motorbikes, water, and building supplies in New Mexico and California. Still gets about 21mpg on the road and 14 in town. I use Amsoil and a dual filtration system. Uses about a 1/2 quart of oil every 5000 miles but does not smoke at all. Will never sell it. My daughter names it Clarence. Wish everything in life worked so well.

Amazin' that you fellas have mega-miles on your T4R's. I always felt these 3rd Gen's were the best. I suppose I have a bit of time, being how mine is ready to turn... 60K.

My dad's 97 Limited had around 420k on the clock when it got it's third 5VZ (didn't actually need it tho, had a new Toyota longblock put in around the 250K mark that was technically still OK). Original trans (never flushed to my knowledge ), original everything else.

Only major repair we did was to the LH framerail when lower 4link bar mount pulled off due to frame rot. Rebuilt framerail and mount with 3/16" plate and off we went.

That truck is now my buddy's daily driver as my Dad picked up an 01 Limited same color, same interior, same engine, same everything with around 180K and is hoping to break the 400K barrier once again.

Original trans on my 96 gave out at 428k, engine gave out at 485k, now has 488k but running an engine I picked up with 135k on it out of a totalled runner I brought.

I'm at 386k on orig engine/trans/etc on a 97.

Hell, shocks didn't get replaced until a few months ago.

Damn 400K! I hope I make it that far. I’m at 220k and still going sting with no major issues. Although I hope this doesn’t get in that way of me reaching 400.
