400 RPMs at idle??? Help please

Started my 4Runner today and the RPMs was sitting at 400. On my way to work it actually stalled at a red light.

When I was on the flat highway the RPMs were sitting at 2000 (when doing 65 mph). Does this sound right?

I did clean my battery terminals last night, but I dont think that could have caused this, could it?

Any idea what could have caused this....and more important, does anyone have a suggestion for fixing it?

My 2003 V6 suffers from a low idle whenever I disconnect and reconnect the battery. For a couple of days afterwards it idles at about 400 RPM in drive, then it eventually returns to normal. I'm not sure if there's a way to avoid this anomaly, but other than the low idle the truck runs great during the period. BTW your 2000 RPM on the highway sounds about right.

if u use an oiled air filter its possible that it somewhat fouled the maf sensor, maybe cleaning it & TB will help. since its an 04, seafoaming it may help also. it could be a # of things tho, recheck ur term. & wires, were the term. really corroded? if so a new battery may be needed soon also.

I had the same problem not too long ago after changing spark plugs. Was driving me CRAZY. 2 days into it, I almost got to the stealership and it started idling correctly. Give it a day of driving and it will reset back to its original idle.

Fixed

Thx all. Fixed itself in 2 days. Strange 4runners act this way. I'll also look into maf and seafoam, as I understand they can improve engine performance.

I bought my 06 SE 4WD last week and it idles at 500 all the time. With AC on, it idles at about 600. Is this normal? It never stalled on me. I actually like it to be that quiet. Should I be worried?

I researched this quite a but earlier this week. Seems likemost folks suggest rmps bt 800 and 950 at idle. Obv u could adjust the idle screw. But u might want to consider the other two maint projects That were suggested to me....clean maf and/or seafoam the engine.

thats some high rpms for idle! at least for the 4runner. Quiet is good!

my V6 always idled a 6 in drive lowest at 5, and 6-7 at most 8 in neutral... I notice at 4 is when U get problems and thats only happened to me after changing spark plugs or resetting the ECU. 6 is solid. The only way I can get close to a 1000 rpm idle is if I sit with my foot on the gas. I'd only imagine that you'd be wasting gas at a 950 idle....I'm not sure if maybe the V8's idle that high, but I couldn't imagine the V6 idling so high.

on my v8, after sitting all night, on start up it idles at 1500+ Iin P, for a couple of minutes, then after its warmed up drops to 1000 in P, when put in D, goes down to around 800-900. so i guess im in with most peoples 800-950 mark. seems fine to me. the v6 in my 08 highlander is also pretty much the same.

Mine normally does the same thing at your pictures show, I have always ran at 500-600 at idle in D in P it is around 800-900 I have always been told that this is the correct idle for the engine.
