Im getting ready to swap out the 3rd memeber and wanted to hear input from you all with 315 (35") tires. 456 or 488 gears?

Is your truck a daily driver, and what offroading do you do?

It is a 2005 v8 2wd from your thread...

Having not regeared myself here is my advice:

Unless you carry a ton of weight or like low range crawling 4.56 seems like the better option. You don't want too high of gears for the interstate and really my truck with 35's seems to do okay on stock gears as long as it isn't windy so I'm thinking 4.56 for mine unless I start planning for 37's.

There are a bunch of topics about this if you feel like reading them all:

My recommendation would be to stay with 4.56.

With 4.88 you're going to be screaming on the highway. If you need lower gearing for crawling then look at going dual cases.

I just completed 4.88's and a ARB rear locker myself and couldn't be happier. I run 33's, RPM's on the highway doing 70 MPH is right @ 2500 (GPS confirmed not speedo)

I have a set of 31's I tow my boat with and RPM's are around 2650 @ 70 MPH. Pulling hills was a breeze compared to the stock 3.73's and the transmission no longer hunts for gears. I am able to hold overdrive up most inclines without downshifting to 4th with my 18' Aluminum G3 Fishing Boat.

Rock Crawling has been a huge improvement over the 3.73's. I have no regrets going with 4.88's for how I use the T4R

Planning to do this upgrade as well. 06 4x4 V8 loaded, bumpers, drawers, gear, rack and RTT.

Tires now are 275/65/18 but upgrading to 275/70/18.

Thinking I should do the 4.88 as well. Is it wise to put a rear locker in while the gears and things are already apart?

Would this kit be ideal, and just have the shop install? Or should I be looking at something pre-assmbled?

Gear Package

Thanks for the info!

I would put a rear locker in. The second you wheel without one and have to pay double the labor you will regret not having done it.

Yes, it's the right kit. I think with the V8 the 4.56 is more than adequate but I'm also only running 285/70/17 but am fully loaded all the time with RTT, Drawers, Bumpers, Camping Stuff, Etc. As for buying kit and having someone install it depends on how much work you want to do. I took everything out myself and took it to a shop. Definitely get a rear locker while it's out. Some people get the ECGS items where you just swap it out, but I didn't want to deal with shipping and having to drop off items. 4.56 or 4.88 you can't go wrong. The 4.56 made a huge difference alone in acceleration and hills.

Sounds like I'll be saving a bit more for the locker and compressor!

Sounds like we've got a very similar setup, and I'll be just having the shop do it all, I don't have the garage space to tackle this one myself. You think the 4.88's are overkill?

Im installing a Detroit Tru Trac. Bullet proof and had them in many of my vehicles. 2wd and a locker is scary. Especially in the snow.

I have the 4.88's now, and I don't regret it at all. I run pretty loaded down when I wheel with much of the same gear. I have no need to do 80MPH on the highway and 2500 RPM @ 70 MPH is just fine with me. I get better fuel mileage now with the 4.88 and 33's then I got with the factory 3.73

Definitely save and do it all at once! As for overkill...that's kind of up to you. I'm very happy with my 4.56's, but as someone mentioned just now 70mph is fine for them. I'm more of an 80mph guy and I never plan on going super big with my tires.

In So Cal, people like driving fast lol. I like doing 80 too, so maybe leaning towards the 4.56's now. Either way its at least a $2k - $2.5k upgrade labor included, so I have some time to mull it over. Thanks everyone for the feedback, can't wait to re-gear.

Haha my T4R is dedicated offroad usage so 70mph is fine headed to the trail. I've got 2 other cars I daily drive.

You won't see a huge difference between 4.56 and 4.88 @ 80mph, maybe 100-300 rpm's

Great thread with some awesome info I was hunting for. I do have a few questions. I am currently running 285/70/17 tires on a 05 V8. I also pull a camper that weighs around 4k fully loaded and is 20 ft long. We have pulled it long distances at times and the 4R really struggles in the wind. I would like to re-gear and was originally thinking of going to 4.11 or possibly 4.30. After reading comments here it sounds like 4.56 might be more up my alley. I plan on continuing to use 4th gear to tow so I was wondering what you guys real world experience is in 4th gear at say 70 MPH? Im hoping a re-gear will help take a bit of strain off the trans and keep the temps down bit. Im heavy now and don't plan on getting any lighter either, the money I saved up for the gears was originally going to go a rear bumper and swing but I think this would be a better investment now. Im planning on going with East Coast Gears, it sounds most people have been pretty happy with them. This truck is still a daily driver and is going to have to stay for awhile. I do carry about 150 to 200 lbs of gear everyday in the back for work. I would really appreciate any input, Thanks!
