Ok there are tons of threads on this and its because of that I need another thread because I cant find the ones that helped me so dont kill me. I sholved snow today that was 2 feet deep and took my 6 hours. I am tired and want answeres!!

In between shoveling I took out the runner and was very impressed that it went through the 2 feet of snow without issue in 4hi. At any rate I wanted to try out the 4lo and it beeped and all that jazz.

Any way I came in the house did some searching on the forum for things to look for. I found some answeres then went back out to try some things and finish shoveling and now I can find the answeres again!!:moping:

I am attempting to start it in 4LO properly I know that.

Couple questions before I go to dealer.

What is the part thats in the glove box, dont recall what people said it was but it had something to do with the 4wd system?

Also that I could tap something with a hammer? Where is it and whats it look like? When I tap it should the car be off, on ect?

Any issues that could be wrong with the car should be covered under my certified power train warranty? I didnt get the bumper to bumper warranty.

Were you in neutral when you tried 4lo?

Nothing in the glove box that I know of that has to do with 4wd (except the owners manuel) and I never heard of hitting anything with a hammer for 4wd except a stuck starter maybe. You need to be in neutral first before you select 4Lo range if you dont it just beeps.

1st try letting the truck roll slowly (less than 2-3mph) in N then select 4lo. Obviously a small hill is required.

If that fails try selecting 4lo in N, foot off of the brake then put it in R, then back to N, then into D and back to N. Let the truck roll a bit in each direction.

I believe I read there was a 4wd ecu behind the golve box that people have had issues with them getting moisture in them.

I also think people were suggestiong tapping the transfe case with a hammer?

I was in neutral first.

Thanks for the tips but still nothing.

Well, whats worked for me is continuously cylcing it from 2wd to 4lo. This worked almost immediately. However, I did spend probably a good hour combined just sitting in my truck watchin the '4lo' flash before I tried cycling it continually.

This is interesting. I've only had my runner for 3 months also. Call me an idiot, but I actually thought the beeping was just how it runs in 4lo. I was only "in" it for a minute to make sure it would drive. I've been taught you never* use 4lo, so I thought it was essentially a warning to remind you not to do anything stupid like stomp on the gas pedal.

Anyway, now I gotta figure out if there is anything wrong with mine. My 3 month warranty ends Jan 3rd (but I do have the 100k powertrain warranty).

Where did you read never to use 4lo?

If you wanted you could run in 4lo 24/7

It was beeping because you were trying to engage it in something other than neutral and it never engaged.......

I never read anything that said not to drive in 4lo...

I just went out and tried it out again. Even in N it wouldn't go from 4hi to 4lo before. This time i just went straight from 2 to 4lo and it was no prob...

Did you follow the instructions on the driver's side visor?

I think what the person was refering to is that just about everyone who sells a 4x4, doesnt ever "use" a 4x4, and that for the vast majority of people who buy them, the reality is, they will never use, or come to a place where they can use low.

One of my favorite questions when I was selling cars was from a person headed to Georgia with his buddy. One had a bronco, and was always upset at the mpg, the other had a 4x2 2dr explorer. They were dead on set on towing the bronco to Georgia with the Explorer because the better MPG in the Explorer...guys would not listen to logic, or reason...or even how to do it properly...spoke to them a few months after and they said they could not believe how bad the mpg was in the explorer and that after they got pulled over and ticketed for improperly towing the Bronco ( yea they were using tow straps and the other guy was steering his truck..) that they both just drove....
it has little to do with this, but its funny.

You said to "never use 4lo" where did you read this?

It is impossible that it went into lo in 2nd. It only can in neutral

I'm having this same issue on my 2004 SR5 v6 - I am trying all the tips above and thus far they have not worked. It is fairly cold out now -10 degrees C. My question is - is there only one actuator for the 4wd system, i.e. does one actuator motor operate all the changes within the xfer case to go from 2wd to 4wd high to 4wd low as well as lock the centre diff? I have no issues going from 2wd to 4wd high or locking the centre diff any of these work in seconds, I just can't get it to 4wd low. If it's one actuator then it is probably not broken - and I just need to keep trying. Anyone know?

Ones internally mounted (2hi,4hi one) the lo one is mounted on the outside of the transfer case; however, cannot be removed without complete removal of the transfer case from the car.
