I dont think the mechanical mechanism is visible from the outside. I believe it is encased in plastic that, as I said, cannot be removed without tearing it all apart.

I didn't really mean never-ever-eva but I "never" said I read that anywhere. I've been taught you'd only ever use it in dire circumstances like to get out of being stuck or if towing someone out of being stuck. I was under the impression you'd never drive over say 10-15 mph in it (which I guess is incorrect) so when it was beeping at me I thought that might just be what it does...
And what I mean from 2 to 4lo, was switching the knob straight from 2hi to 4lo while in N. Before I was in neutral and 4hi but it didn't want to engage for some reason, just kept beeping. When I went straight from 2lo it went right in like a Tiger Woods'........putt.

Well trucks at the dealer. The day I relised the 4lo wasnt working I also noticed a very small spot of pink fluid in the snow. The truck is always parked in the garage and I never noticed it before.
When I dropped it off I told them to check it out, sure enough in addition to the actuator for the 4wd being bad there was a leak in the radiator.
Thank goodness for the warranty!!
