4Lo surging/lurching?

Has anyone experienced this or have thoughts on what the issue is? I put my 4runner into 4lo yesterday on pavement just to exercise the 4wd, and from 0-15mph or so there is surging or lurching as I accelerate. 4hi seems fine. This is without the center diff lock on. Tried to search online but haven't seen anything.

That is normal operation.

You're changing the grearing for massive amounts of torque, which is what you're feeling.

It's especially noticeable when done on dry pavement.
That really causes the 4WD drivetrain to bind up.

No it does not. You can drive in 4lo all day at low speeds on pavement. Only when you lock the center differential does the drivetrain bind on pavement and only then when turning.

Had the same thing happen. Activated 4Lo just to work the system on dry pavement. Experienced the same lurching mentioned here. I was a little worried at first, but I am glad this is normal. Thanks for the info everybody!

You want lurchy, put it in 4lo, shift it into L (watch your tach, you won't get going too fast before you're redlining it) and let off the gas abruptly while going a couple mph. It'll lurch to an almost stop very fast haha. Soooooooo much torque.
