4R credit it deserves

With the ability of theses trucks , the capability of the 4x4 system w/atrac , VSC for on road , seems like they don't get acknowledged for as such a tough capable off roader .

My dad who hates Toyota was baffled today on what we were going through today and the pounding it was taking and the off road features , like the DAC which I used off road today coming down a long snow/ice covered hill with frozen mud ruts underneath. On the way up the hill I was crawling up in 4lo with the diff locked , 1st gear and it never broke a sweat.

I agree, I've done some intermediate off roading and had no trouble what so ever. Handled everything easily. I haven't done anything hard core yet mind you, but if it didn't look so good right now I'd probably take it to the limits. I'm not without some pinstriping though, and have replaced the rear bumper already.

The 4runner has a great chassis augmented by a handful of useful electronic features which combine to make the best suv in its class... hood scoop or not! (C&D jab)

I just drove 180 miles round trip, across the state of Maine from Belfast to Sugarloaf (great day skiing btw) in a snowstorm. I was comfortable, and felt perfectly safe behind the wheel. The truck handled remarkably well, traveling tracked up secondary roads with the traction control engaging just to keep it straight when pulling out onto the road. The VSC remained inactive, mainly because of the slower speeds and a killer set of snow tires.

just out of curiosity, why does your dad hate toyota so much?

I drove mine into a dry lake bottom, very deep mud, Scratched one of my rims up due to the big mean rocks hidden in the mud. I thought I was going to get stuck but came right out. I did have some speed behind me, and it just plowed through the mud like a sled. I was impressed, I thought for sure I was going to get stuck. Took me several days to get all of the mud out...

Old school , NO foreign vehicles. This is my first one also. I've really been through some crap and pretty hard off roading and it handles it without a tick.

Dealer laugh's at me an all the crap them find hanging underneath , like the Corn stalk hooked on the front skid plate ....lol

At the same time you also don't read about them not being capable either but the 4th gen has added a bit of cushiness and lost a little ground clearance,locker,manual tranny and even the "oh sh*t" handles on the A pillars so it has moved a little more to on-road than off road worthiness in factory trim.

The FJ is toyota's off-road SUV now and that's how it's totally marketed.
