4R resale/trade in values

Today March 28, 2024 I traded in my 2020 4R TRD ORP W/KDSS on a brand new 2024 TRD ORP W/KDSS, same features and options but more so on the 2024.This is my fourth 4R in the past 22 years, every one I traded or sold held it's value incredibly well. This deal was no different, my 4R and $7K out the door for a four year newer 4R, what did I gain ? Bunch of new safety features, more cameras, LED lights, heated steering wheel and a reset on the warranty and Toyota care. I was looking at buying a Lexus GX in 2020 but bought the 4R instead, I just did a KBB resale value on a 2020 GX and a 2020 4R, the 4R is actually worth a little more even though the GX would have cost $25K more at the time. Not many vehicles out there hold their resale value like a 4R.

I just purchased my first 4 Runner, I went with the TRD OFF Road Premium model because I'm thinking this model, or the TRD Pro will have the best resale values in the long run. I will not be off roading my vehicle, but do like the vehicle as equipped and thinking to long term value will be higher than the other models. I can't help but think the new 2025 models will be pushing the $60,000 figure for the TRD models, thus the 2024 models will be prime merchandise in the future. At 79 years old this could be my last new vehicle, but who knows.

Wow! Only 7k depreciation over 4 years? Did you have any mods on your old rig, or was it stock?

Seems like used car prices are still higher than they used to be. For funsies, did you check out what the dealer is asking for your old rig after you sold it?

It sounds like great news but only is if you are selling and don't have to replace what you sell.

These high resale values reflect 30% or so inflation in car prices over the past few years so if you have to buy another vehicle after you sell you're going to give it right back.

That was my thought on models that are more 4 wheel drive like the TRD Off Road on resale. My feeling on mods will probably not return much value if any on trade-in, especially to a dealer, the more stock the better. These 4 Runners are not Jeep Wranglers (thank goodness) and values are pretty much set just because of the 4 Runners reputation and track record. Glad to see the trade worked out well for you.
