4Rager's Build: ...and so it begins

Upon realizing that there is not a discount for ordering the Icon "kit" vs the price of each component individually, and a subsequent observation that Metal Tech has a sale for 30% off Light Racing UCA's for the rest of this month, I made a purchase and decided I might as well start documenting my (at this point mostly planned) build.

First of all, I live in Reno, NV and I purchased my 2014 Trail Edition Premium in December 2014. I came from a modified 2002 Audi A4 that got me through college and my first few jobs with its share of problems, but it was a love/hate relationship. I bought a 4Runner because I knew it would be reliable and I wanted to be able to go fishing/camping/hunting in places my Audi couldn't go and something that I could keep for the rest of my life. I knew even before I bought it that I was going to mod it, and from researching these forums I learned 33’s will require a lift. I told myself I would let the stock tires wear out, since I just paid for them, meanwhile I would research and save up for the lift/tires I wanted. I’ve also come to a realization that this truck is my daily driver, and though I plan to keep it forever and have dreams of running the Rubicon one day, it won’t be in this vehicle. That being said, I still have high expectation of this vehicle I would love for it to be more capable than it is today. I guess I should also add that I consider myself a pretty good driver who is not immune to getting in over his head, yet has spent a fair share of time driving SUV’s in snow and offroad, but this will be my first modded truck.

EDIT: Having a lowered Audi didn't stop me from visiting my favorite fishing spots (even though it should have). I found this photo of the exact rock that ripped off AC compressor hose, which led to a failed AC compressor, which was the beginning of the end for that poor vehicle. (KBB was ~$2500, but it had bad AC compressor and needed a new clutch. I removed the turbo kit and sold it to a junkyard for $850).

During the past year I've gone on plenty of adventures, tinted the front windows, upgraded the sound system, and added a K&N CAI (haters gonna hate). I’m at 17.5k miles. Like I mentioned above, the Metal Tech sale led me to purchase the first piece of my lift kit, so without further ado, here are the details of my planned build:

-Icon extended travel front coilovers with external reservoirs
-Light Racing upper control arms
-Icon V.S. 2.0 rear shocks
-Icon 2” springs
-285/70r17 on stock wheels
-Probably Duratrac’s but maybe Trail Grapplers or another MT

UPDATE: I'm giving a hard look at Fox. I think the progressive valving will be better for what I intend to do, being that it will be softer in the initial travel so better for bump absorption cruising down dirt roads, but it's not like it won't reach full compression when pushed in a crawling situation. I'm also told the rebuilds are cheaper and I plan to keep this truck forever.

Down the road:
-Metal Tech rock sliders
-Metal Tech rear lower links
-Replace stock Trail skids
-HID kit
-Exhaust

Way down the road:
-Maybe F & R bumpers
-Roof rack
-LED light bar

Here are some pictures of my adventures in stock form:

At least the stock tires are good enough for this:

So anyway, this thread will disappear for a while since everything else won't be happening until my stock tires wear out in the next 8 months or so. But like I said, this is my first modded truck so I am open to all comments and suggestions. I think my next mod will be to paint the silver accents on the front and rear bumpers with black plastidip, along with the emblems. Also I need to edit a video from yesterday of my friend an I out on our usual trails in the mud (which is very rare out here) and watch the stock tires perform painfully bad like we all knew they would. Thanks for reading and I appreciate the questions/comments!

At least plasti-dip the K&N intake tube black! :) congrats on the truck , welcome to the forum and glad to see you already enjoyed some of its potential in stock form.

It's good to roll stock, to see how your rig can be improved. I had that intention too, until the stupid Black Friday sales started hitting my inbox!

Excellent start man. Truck looks good, and it seems like you've found it's limits in stock form. Now you have your base line, so improving it will only be easier from here with great rewards! Cheers!

Wanted to share these pics from yesterday. Pretty much maxed out the approach angle (then again one wheel's in a ditch).

i'll be following your thread as you build...nice looking TE. i was planning initially to immediately lift and armor, but honestly, i'm pretty impressed with what my TE can do stock. if and when i go for it, i'm considering a very similar setup as you have chosen, so i'm excited to see how this goes for you!

We've been having a mild winter on the west coast, and such my friend and I went out on President's Day. I posted some pics of this rut on the descent, but these pics show what it was like going up hill.

And now, the true reason for this post, is to show this video of a stock TE tackling this rut with the aid of A-TRAC. I'm sure if I had AT or MT tires and my desired lift, the rear locker may have done it, but stock is the world I live in for now. Bonus footage of me raging which makes for some decent CAI sound clips.

PS: the video was shot with a gopro and is unedited. Thanks to my co-pilot focusing on video, I didn't even know the wheel was off the ground until I saw the video.

I got a chuckle out of your "ATRACCCCCCC!" yell.

Haha yea I was messing around and didn't have any time to edit the video. I figured someone would say something about that.

The UCA's arrived last week. Now I just need to sell more of my old Audi turbo kit parts to fund the rest of my build!

Went out after work today. Trail starts across the highway from my parking lot.

Thought it was steeper than it was.

Other side, used A-TRAC to get up but didn't lock the rear (pretty worthless with my tires)

Hating on the stock tires is like beating a dead horse, but unfortunately I've noticed that over the past year and a half they've taken quite a beating. There are a number of chunks missing like the one below. It's starting to make me scared to do anything but drive on casual dirt roads to go shooting and stuff. It's almost bad for the vehicle's reputation to come with such garbage, because here in Reno the first thing I'm asked when non car people hear I got a 4Runner a lot of times is, "Oh, I bet it's great in the snow." I wish I could say yes, but these tires are terrible. Side note; these tires say they should last 60k, don't they look a bit worn for just under 20k?

id get rid of that K&N in a hot minute and let some other poor dumb sap run it. they are AWFUL at cleaning air. if you want a high flow filter for your truck look no further than AFE or the TRD intake.

i personally like the AFE filter because you can get the pro-dry filters, which use no oil, are washable, 12 layers of surgical grade cotton and have a 2 million mile warranty.

and as a side note for the tires, i bought my truck with 42,000 miles on it with the original bridgestone tires still on it - they were totally shot. 2 of them were at 1/32 of an inch, other two were at 2/32

Interesting to hear you are a fan of AFE. I told myself I would never buy one of their products again after the intake I had on my Audi. It had nothing to do with the filter, but the hard plastic tube had these shotty rubber grommets that all the additional hose fittings pressed in to. One day I'm driving home from work and the car starts billowing smoke, which turned out to be a blown turbo. Upon further inspection, the AFE intake was missing a grommet with others in a visibly damaged state from the edges on the plastic tube. The compressor wheel on the turbo was damaged meaning it failed because it sucked something up. I am 99% sure it was one of the grommets from the AFE intake. I felt extra stupid because, just like on T4R's, intakes on the Audi don't do shit, and I only bought it cuz I had money burning a hole in my pocket.

Instead of cleaning the K&N next time, I will look into replacing the filter with a different brand. I've used an AEM dryflow filter per a recommendation from a shop, which worked fine, but the winters were rough on it.

A coworker of mine had to one-up me and get a TRDP (but I'll be back on top once I get my lift). It's funny how you can still tell from the rear, even with my recently plasti-dipped rear bumper. The photo looks kinda weird because my truck was angled left and his angled right.

Made this album a while back but never posted it here. For the record I wasn't stuck, I just didn't want to risk sliding into the tire or rock on the inside. Especially because I was on a pleasure cruise after work by myself. If I were give it a real attempt I would have backed up and come at it from a different angle.

Fast forward a few months...

My Fox Coilovers finally came in (ordered 6/26/15...). Now I just need to make my decision on wheels and tires and install everything. Hopefully that will all be done by the end of September. I already talked to Discount Tire about getting a least a few hundred $$ from the warranty on the stock Bridgestones, and they said they were more than happy to help. They also have a good price on the wheels I want and he quoted me $234/ea for 285/70r17 KO2's, so when I'm ready to pull the trigger hopefully I'll get a good deal on the whole package. There's also a 4 Wheel Parts around here, and last time I talked to the guy on the phone I had him dig around for a coupon for free mounting and balancing, so if I can't get a warranty I might go there. I heard they can be incompetent though, so that could be a problem since I need someone who knows what they're doing to get the alignment correct with the new UCA's.
