4Runner 1988 2.4 5speed manuel without A/C ??

Hi,

I ´d like to buy this 4Runner this week, but something sounds strange to me. The guy says it has NO A/C !... I thought the EFI-SR5 had it. Or is it the guy who is trying to sell me a car with a misfunctioning or rather broken A/C ?

For the rest the car looks good, especially inside, I can see the car has been in the hands of a careful driver, apparently he died ten years ago and this car had been in a garage for 9 years, then the actual owner got it and did just the necessary to make it look decent and sell it. It is a 22-RE with 275.000 miles, sounds nice, soft, 4x4 does well, it wasn´t probably used at all. It has the stock radio-cassette ;-) so cool !...

I have been all of my life in love with this 85-89 Hilux, wether pick-up or surf, now I found one that I like. "I am in love with my car, gotta a feel for my automobile..." (Queen- Freedy Mercury, Brian May)

Umm, why not look and see if it has it?
If it does, there will be an a/c compressor on the engine and and a/c ON button on the dash climate control panel.

According to the instructions and drawings in the PDF file I downloaded from here, the compressor is supposed to be located in the front side of the engine in the area where the most belts are located, and the cooling unit under the dashboard on the passenger side.

I saw what was supposed to be the hole of a button in the climate control panel (left side of the lower row of the controls) but it was "blinded" by some plastic. That´s why I tend to believe the guy does not want to tell me the A/C is not working for I would have a good reason to take the price down... :naughty:

I have an '85 EFI SR5 4Runner and it doesn't have A/C and never did. Maybe this one doesn't have it because it never did? I don't think every SR5 had every option on it (A/C, sunroof, power windows etc etc).

Just a thought.

I have a Gen 2 SR5 with no sunroof.

Maybe that option wasn't originally included with your truck.

you might both be right as this one car was imported from Germany and by then A/C was still an option in Europe, not like nowadays when it is standard. I can do without it, I dont really care that much, as long as heating is working !! It gets cold here in winter ;-)

I was trying to find a motor for the back door window, any idea where? Igoes down well but it takes it a while to close and needs some help, I ´ve been visiting a couple of websites with spare parts (those holy google shows us) and nowhere that part. No problem for front doors, but no back door window motor...

Rockauto has the rear window motor, but I'd check to make sure your trouble isn't wiring or rusty/bent tracks before you drop the coin for a new one.

You´re right, we should always check first what the source of the problem is, I´ll do that asap as I pick it up.
I suppose the car will also need some more parts after I check it indeep. But overall, the mechanical part of it sounded and looked good to me. No oil leaks in any place, no timing chain sound, steady idle... wait and see what will fall down first !!

Cool Color! So do you have the original papers from Germany? Sounds funny, my 4runner comes from switzerland To Germany, its a 1989 in Same Color with chrompackage like yours....

Nope Rockatanski, I didnt see the german papers, as the car has already been imported to Spain in 1993. Probably due to heavy use there then sold here, but as I said the car has been for ten years in a garage, being only started a couple times a month to keep it running at minimum.

I fell in love with it at first sight , of course it needs work on it to look as good as possible, but it is in pretty good condition overall. It´s been over 8 months since I started to look for one. I missed a 86 double cab pick-up by a couple of hours, too late it was gone. But this one, no way she could escape from me, I love her !!

Right !! especially when it is hot and rainy like it happens here in summer

the only "advantage" of having a removable top is with the girls, they love it :banana:

but I am not much into remove-put back... ;-) though, in summer it is true that it is something quite pleasant, if it wasn´t the jerks who throw rubbish inside or worse, like spitting or cigarettes to burn the seats... yes, we have such ones here

I confess I kind of scanned your post but I did not see where you live. The 1st gen 4Runner A/C was a dealer installed option. I paid about $450 for A/C on a new 4Runner years ago. The wire harness for A/C is lurking within all 4Runners. You can piece together everything from junkyard parts. There are lots of threads on yotatech. There's also very good information in the FSM online for the '88 4Runner. There are a couple of eBay venders that sell the parts from junk trucks. I could not find an auction on there right now but I stole a picture of everything you need from an earlier auction. You will need new O rings , a belt and a new drier if you buy used parts.
