4runner 96 problem

I have a problem with my 96 4runner SR5 4x4, when I accelerate hard my engine shuts down and when I turn it back on and put in drive it turns off, I have to keep my engine rev up to put in drive, so it wouldn't turn off. Any ideas?

Have you ever replaced the front 02 sensor? Sounds like your 02 may be going out and running really rich and you need to rev it to keep it burning.

Is the exhaust black? - are you getting bad gas mileage?

There are a number of other things it could be but the 02 (especially if it is original) is a good culprit.

I would definitely check your mass air flow sensor although your check engine light should be on. The light may also not be working but i would definitely check the maf sensor it bolts into the side of the intake tubes and wires run off of it you can take it out and check to make sure the element is not broken. I would definitely change the maf sensor even if its not you can get them around $100.

Most likley a sensor problem. Changing the 02 sensor involves two bolts and about 10 minutes. Cleaning the Mass air flow sensor is just as easy. I would check the 02 first though as the mass airflow sensor for your year runner is very delicate and expensive...

Do you have the factory service manual or a Haynes repair book for your year runner?

I Don't think I have the manual, but I am going to clean my throttle body and check my MAF censor and also the O2

Has the timing belt been replaced recently?
If the crank pulley bolt is loose enough, it'll let the crank angle sensor wheel slide far enough out to disrupt the signal.

I've also seen a MAF not set a code, but cause the engine to die because it was shorted out with a piece of air filter chewed out by a rodent.

Timing Belt has been changed and a friend told me it could the idle control

Yes, it could also be a sticky isc motor; but that usually affects idle and not hard acceleration.
When you say it happens when you accelerate hard, do you mean you accelerated hard, then came to a stop and it died?
If so I would bet it probably is the idle speed control motor.

When I am accelerating hard (probably going over 60 mph)
and come to a complete stop my car dies.

Almost positive it's the isc then.
Try tapping on it with a screwdriver while someone else starts the engine.
If the idle goes normal then it's definitly the isc sticking; they get carboned up.
