Good day guys

I recently moved to the USA from South Africa and am interested in purchasing a 4Runner,

What year and model would you recommend, want 4x4 and looking at spending around $5000-$8000 depending if I can get financing....

Any advice would be great
Thanks

I'd try and get into a '97 or newer. The 3.4L is a great motor and the whole rest of the vehicle is pretty sweet. When you find one consider where the t-belt is within it's 90k service life as you negotiate price. Good luck!

If you spend the upper limit of your buget you could get a pretty nice 3rd Gen. You might even get lucky and find one that is locked.

Thanks for the advise guys, just to clarfiy your comments

By t-belt do you mean timing belt?
and when you say a locked model, do you mean locked diff or what.

Thanks very much for the advice

Yes timing belt and differential lock... The diff lock isn't avail in the 01 and 02 but they have other goodies... It's tough to go wrong.

I agree in trying to get a 3rd gen, (96-02). The second gen. is fine, but no air bags and the engine is low on power and thirsty, (90-95). The 2nd gen. are usually around the $5,000 range or less.

If your looking for a 3rd gen. a lot more goodies come on 99 and up, but they can be higher than $8,000, maybe less than that if you look.

On the 3rd. gen. the good thing about the timing belt, is the engine is non-interference. It is suppose to be done at 90,000, but a lot of people may of put off buying one, so it is a good idea to check to see if it has been done.

Bazza where in AZ do you live? Ive see alot of 4R really cheap just picked my up. 99 2wd , t-belt done , 4 fresh new michelin tires and really clean interior

gl on the buy, keep us posted

Even though '99 and up have more "features" I would definitely try to get one that had a locker if I were going to use it offroad.
