4Runner Bumpers from Hell

I can't believe what my t4r has suffered in just 3 months of ownership. 1st someone scapes off some paint from the rt hand plastic crap bumper, at least they are honest and leave a note with contact info.
Thats a few hundred $$, not fixed yet.
2day my wife notices that some ass smacked the left hand corner pushing in the flimsy crap and cracking it, causing the reflector to drop out.
Thats 2 4 2.
I was lookin at the waag stuff in another thread earlier 2day saying 2 myself that looks handy.
Now i'm a believer.
However the fault is with Toyota and all the other rough tough SUV manufacturers for putting this type of inferior design on the road.
Is it the way the freakin bumpers stick out on the corners that just invites jerks to hit it there?

I feel you pain. While polishing & waxing last weekend, I noticed that I have about EIGHT small chips on the front of the hood. The vehicle has 40k miles on her. But what will it look like at 80k ? Is my T4R a road-rock magnet or is my hood paint simply too thin?

As much as it pains me to say this... Paint is one of those thing Jeep does very well. Their paint process is intended to be used off road (triple coat with thick primer). I guess they figured when the tranny fails and you are on the side of the road, your vehicle should at least look good...

Who can you blame? EPA wants things more efficient, people want more power. These are contradictory requests. Toyota is trying to make the vehicles lighter while improving on aerodynamics and appearance and gas mileage. Chrome bumpers weigh a ton, but they will protect the car. Making a steel frame to fit every corner of the vehicle would not be cost efficient nor would you be able to deliver a vehicle on time. Makes you want to set up a security camera in the back of your car to catch the a******* that can't drive.

I got three K on my 05 and I already have paint chips on my hood! I got like 4-5 spots already that is already messed up. Disappoint.. very disappointed..

I learned the hard way, don't touch your bumpers to anything. I backed into a brick wall, hardling moving at all, just a tap, and it broke my right rear tail light assembly. The light never came close to the wall, the bumper pooched up and did the deed.

So, remember, don't touch the bumpers to anything, it's really expensive. The bumpers are pure junk.

I've just wrtten them off. I'm not going to repair the scars because it just may happen all over, again. I know it's my fault but I was hardly moving. Imagine if I was backing up at the speed I normally do. It probalbly would have destroyed the whole back of my 4Runner and wiped out both tail lights. Junk, junk junk.

Am I missing something.....cause 8 small rock chips in 40K miles sounds pretty damn good to me.....I go through a couple windshields and uncountable #'s of rock chips in 30,000 kilometers!!

Oh and some dick took a a chunk out of my black 03's front bumper when it was like 3 fuckin days old.....first 4rth gen on the roads within 300 miles and the basterds found a way to hit it even tucked way back in the parking lot As soon as I got that touched up, some other johnny hit the back end!!!

I dunno why these trucks attract morons to hit them...must be damn Jeep owners or somethin

Man do I feel your pain. Some A-hole backed into my front bumper and not only took the paint off in three seperate and quite noticeable spots, but also scratched it up pretty good. Now I have to have it fixed (I am going to be out about $500). Sucks to be me....I am lucky though that my Toyota/Lexus body shop warranties their work for life....

Just make sure you take a tour of the shop before having work done there. A lady hit my bumper not long ago and to make a long story short, my first thought was to take it to my toyo/lexus dealership for repair, after asking to see some work completed, they then sent me to who they use to contract there bodyshop work out to. Now the work that was completed was overall a good job, but I work for toyota so I see 600 cars a day, needless to say it wasnt the quality I was looking for. But after taking a tour of other shops I did find one I was satisfied with, although I did have to return the 4runner twice. All the shops I went to also had the lifetime warr.

My wife's liberty has a huge chip in the hood and the door from rocks. I wouldn't say it has a better quality paint job!

Not sure about the liberty, but the wranglers, cherokees, and grands used to have a triple coat process for the paint on top of a primer coat. With all of the cost cutting, they may have eliminated that as well. I had my '91 wrangler for 12 years and the only paint chips were typical paint chips around the windshield frame from being sandblasted in the winter by sand trucks. All other areas looked bright and shiny with only a single coat of wax each year. This used to be my offroading truck, so it saw many tangles with brush along the trails...
