Rear Deck Shelf

I made a rear deck so that I can stow all the camping gear and still be able to access the stuff on the bottom.

It works well. Plus the dog gets a good seat on the top there.

You sound like a guy who has some mechanical and fabrication know-how. There are a lot of people out there who have no clue which end of a socket goes on the nut. People like that keep a lot of the niche fabrication companies in business. Also people who have more time than money. I bought my sliders premade because right now I have more work than spare time and would rather be wheeling than welding at the moment.

Hopefully the busy thing subsides so I can get in the garage again soon. I have a good idea for a tray system in the back of my 4R.

My favorite camping mod is the dome light mod I came up with (shameless plug). Instead of three independent switches for the dome lights this mod makes all three dome lights turn on when any door or the hatch is opened. I got tired of looking for stuff in the dark! I recently drove another third gen at night and wondered why the hell it was so dark when entering, then it dawned on me. haha The link describes in greater detail the process.

And a rear window switch that doesn't require the key in ignition:

That last one is more useful than it seems--it doubles as an interior gate latch (just roll the window down and use the outside latch. )

I like that, seems pretty convenient. How is it wired in?

I think my next camping mod will be some sort of shades for the windows. It gets super hot after the sun comes up.

I'm wondering who else likes to sleep in their 4Runner when they're out camping. What are some of the mods that you've done to make it a more enjoyable experience? So far, I have built a storage platform for the rear, based on RamRod's thread (Link to his pictures)

I tried to build magnetic screen coverings for the side and rear windows, but the magnets I bought were not very good. They were too small, and kept sticking to each other, and it was also difficult to sew the trim around the window screens. So I gave up on that project, and was looking at some commercial alternatives such as this one:

Anyone use one of these before? I'd like to make one for the rear window, but can't figure out how to deal with the damn rear wiper being in the way..

Anyone install any type of insulation in the rear panels, to make it warmer while you're sleeping in the cold? I'm wondering if this would be a winter-only thing, and if I'd have to remove it in the summer to avoid baking like an oven. Thoughts?

I found a thread on YotaTech where a guy was selling an old '87 4Runner, and in his post he said



The stuff seems pretty thin, and I definitely think it would help cover the window glass and keep the warmth from escaping there. I don't know if it'd be suitable for behind the rear cargo area panels. I don't feel like pulling all the panels and installing the Reflectix in the winter, only to remove it all come spring time.

You guys do any inverter mods / LED lighting / fans for the rear or anything of that nature?

FWIW, we have been using those window socks for a couple years, they were great...we use them for the kids and have no problems staying in place. Best shade/ventilation option we have found.

How is that attached?

There are steel tabs that extend off the metal grate and get sheet metal screwed to the window pinch weld. I trimmed the interior plastic panel to fit. It's very solid
