The 4th gen temp gauge goes to minus 22 and then gives two lines.

Thanks for this info, yeah -22 F = -30* C. I saw -21* F last week here in MPLS and wondered if there was a minimum. My 4Runner was manufactured in Ontario, I wonder why only -22* (-30*).

Me too! seems like it should be read colder...I was in Tok Alaska and it was -36 but it only read -22 so I had to guess as I went down the highway. after -40 below nothing really mattered....it was just bitter ass dry frozen.

How were the roads? Namely, how was the Haines Highway? I live in Anchorage and my girlfriend is moving up from Seattle in mid March. I'm flying to Juneau, jumping on the ferry with her to Haines, and then we're driving her 01 Jetta up. I've only ever driven that stretch in the summer (as recently as this summer - to Skagway and back) so I'm not unfamiliar with the roads but am curious as to how well they're maintained in the winter. Regardless, we'll be preparing ourselves for the worst.

That stretch from Haines to Haines Junction was challenging with high winds and blowing snow. The road is in good condition itself and gets worse from Haines Junction to the Canadian Border and beyond to Tok. For 25 miles after you cross the border be ready for numerous frost heaves marked by little orange flags. Drive in daylight hours only, carry gear and I recommend a sat phone. That all said, the conditions vary day to day. I would like to say in March it will be better and could be less "enjoyable".
