4Runner Chop Idea

So I have been researching this for about a month now. I have searched for chopped 4runners and they are not quite what I'm looking for. I have always wanted a 4Runner with no top, caged, and half doors.... Sure I can go out a buy a wrangler and be done with it, but I don't want a wrangler.... I have talked to a few race guys that manufacture their own roll cages for drag racing, and the idea is very doable. Basically this is the top I'm looking for:

After numerous conversations and trying to figure out the proper way of doing it, seems like 2.5" ERW tube would be best because of the weight of the 4Runner. Tubing would run me around $600, and maybe another $500 for shop help (HF bender wouldn't touch this tube, I don't think), the total cost would be up to around $4000 with everything needed to be made from scratch... Would leave pillars and windshield alone and tie in to the existing structure... Was told with correct design and bracing the cage would be structurally sound and safe to use on the street in the event of an accident. Additional bracing would be needed for the A and B pillars, which would require remounting of seatbelts, or using harness, however using harness would make rear seats not useable. Doors can be cut in half, or half door manufactured. The big thing Obviously would be weather... That can resolved with custom vinyl covers that would snap on to the tube...

Am I crazy here? I mean I think it's really doable. The 4Runner isn't my main vehicle anymore, but I can't part with it either.... Any cons or pros you guys can think of please share... If I pull the trigger on this, once tube is cut and bent it'll be a couple days to assemble...

Thanks for your input,
Rafal

Pro: Pureawesomeness

Cons: Hard to make that first cut

When I went after an off road rig I bought a nice 97 3.4 5spd with 150k for $4,500. The body and paint were fantastic. I just couldn't bring myself to deface such a nice rig. I sold that one and went out and found a $500 beater, that way I don't feel bad at all about hacking it up.

These kinds of trucks always start out as basketcases, chopping up a decent 3rd gen would be a waste, if you want a chopped up one, sell it and buy a wreck.

This fits your description well.

Yes chopping up a perfectly good truck seems like a waste and everything... My truck has almost 400k on it... Spent a ton of money on maintenance and repairs, made a bumper, added a bunch of stuff, etc.... Basically I have spent a lot of time with this truck and selling it wouldn't be worth while, regardless of all the maintenance or modifications to the truck, it's not worth that much... Selling it doesn't make sense to me. Like I said before it's not my DD anymore, i don't owe money on it... The suspension set up and everything else is pretty much where I want it, so I don't want to buy a wrecked truck, and have to redo everything again...

Ah, I see, having 400k+ miles definitely changes the story, since realistically any resale value is going to come solely from the modifications you've already done, I'd say go for it.

Why erw over Dom? I'd probably not want seamed tubing protecting my ass in a rollover.

DOM has a seam too, just very hard to see. I'd go DOM too, no inside flash makes butting easier and sleeving an option too. For the street it won't matter, if you are going to hammer it off road it does.

To the OP I say, if you are going to do it, finish it. Been around a lot of these type of projects that don't get finished because it is a LOT OF WORK. And I do mean a lot. Have you attempted anything remotely this involved before? Just the mention of the HF bender makes me cringe.
