That said, I KNOW the 87 octane there is 87, the 89 is 89 and the 91 is 91. Although there's no way to "water down" gas, I suppose some really cheeseball station could be passing off 85 as 87 or something gay like that.

Unless you personally know the gas station owner, you can't even be sure that 91 is 91 and not 89 or 87.

A local newspaper broke a story where they did an investigation in our area where there were lots of unscrupulous owners having the trucks dump 87 into all the tanks, even the premium. So customers were/are paying an extra 20-30 cents for the same gas.

The distributors were defending themselves as saying that if they didn't do what the guy was asking the owner would cut them off and go with a distributor who would and they would lose business.

The state of course says they do test for octane, but each station is only tested like once every 3-5 years so the stations can do it almost with impunity. Another good reason to go with 87 if can.

Northof49 - Are you saying that you switch grades of gas often? I would think that would cause a knock if you keep switching back and forth.

No, there's just a million different vehicles in my family these days. I would only use 94 in my Vette which has a motor from waaaay before knock sensor days so I could run a little more timing......and maybe in the sled.
