4runner died and the horn sounded; can't solve.

Good evening!

My 1996 4runner recently died while driving. It died quickly. No sputter or gasping. As quickly as it died, the horn started blaring.

When I turn the key off the horn stops, but as soon as I switch it from ACC to ON the horn blasts and the engine will not engage.

I've tried the factory alarm reset with the toggle. I've disconnected the battery for >24 hours.

When I toggle the kick panel switch I can hear a solenoid attempting to reset, but I still get the horn and no start.

1996 4runner limited. 146K.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't tell you what's up with your truck – but you ought to disconnect your horns before your neighbors try to murder you in your sleep.

Did it do anything different over the last few weeks, months or year? But I agree with StreetCreeper. Disconnecting it as soon as possible so you aren't murdered. Let me know what you come up with and i'll do my best to assist.

Sputtering? Miss-fires? Lack of Power? Any information helps...

Sounds like some wires melted together.... unless the alarm is involved

I totally agree with TheDurk. I don't know how to disconnect the alarms system in our trucks, but that would be my first step

I can't add anything useful to this thread, but I'm sure thankful that I don't have an alarm on my T4R, lol. I've seen too many electrical gremlin stories relating to alarm systems on here.

But yeah, melted wires was my first thought as well. Something's definitely getting crossed/arc somewhere. Hopefully your computer didn't get fried.

Does the oe alarm cut the motor off?
