why did toyota put 2 different 4wd engaging system?
Lol I found that out by reading the manual while taking a shit.Unfortunately not qualified to say what is causing issue but thank you for tip on running my 4H once a month!
Isn't the advantage with the lever being able to put in in "N"?
From what I read also I don't believe there is much different. The lever or knob both work the same. It's not like any of it is "truly manual" nowadays electronics control it I believe (may be wrong).
The lever is connected in the TE, it's not electronic like the knob in the SR5's.

every time I shift into 4H, I have buyers remorse... should have bought a TEP.
Shift lever was definitely part of my decision to go with the TEP. Tried and true...
Nothing to do with your problem, but do you know what a 30 degree slope looks like? You arent driving up it. Maybe you meant 30% grade?

I am learning something new, limited to 7 MPH in low on a TE? I have been over 7 MPH in mine.
No offense taken. I think you are right, I wasn't pressing down. I wonder if the service message is just coincidental to MY failure. I'll check it out tomorrow.
According to the 500+ page manual (of which I read 300 pages today), you're actually supposed to drive it for 10 miles each month.
I noticed that recently while reading the manual on my new 4Runner. Seems like a lot to expect -- we don't all live near a suitable off-road area, or even a dirt road. Although I would love to have the time to go out to the boonies and do some off-roading on a frequent, regular basis, life doesn't cooperate. I often go several months without ever being able to leave the pavement.
