4runner has 150,000 miles, Want to take it on 4,000 mile trip..

Ride on dude.... take that thing every where you can... thats what i do.. mine is the travel car.. its just more comfy and reliable that way. plus it has all the amenities for road trips. Drive on......lol

It sure is more comfy than taking my friends civic! I'm thinking of adding some lights to the front grille bumper i have installed since i'm gonna be in some super dark, isolated stretches of road at night. Just not sure what lights to install. Might start a different thread on that. Maybe some rectangular/square lamps!

If its that bad I would go with a set of 55w H.I.Ds in your highbeams and n e where else u want.. also I highly recommend the 4300k nothing more.. you will notice a tremendous change. If ur intrested let me know I can help.

Depending on your route, you can hit Four Corners on the way to/from Utah. Last summer they were building a new monument so it was closed but I might be an interesting stop.

oh, i meant adding some lamps to my hunter grille guard, i didn't think about replacing the headlight bulbs. Aren't those xenon bulbs you listed? If so i though you had to change the whole headlight housing for those?

Yeah there's all kinds of interesting things when you get out there. I remember that area being navajo land and they had random open-air pottery shops in the middle of nowhere!

omg! the larger living-room size rugs are like $5,000! :wow: it's like a museum peice! think of the mods you could do for $5,000 instead lol

Replace all the fluids and filters, replace belts and hoses (save the old ones as spare bring them with you) wheel balance and alignment. Then Id make sure i brought extra oil, coolant, hoseclamps, basic tools etc.....thats about it. have a fun trip

Plugs should be changed every 30k and rear diff is like 30, 60, 120..something like that.

Other then the other mentioned fluid changes, these are what I would do for sure before a long trip, if they had not been done already.

I'm not sure if this was covered by anyone else yet, but if your tires are within 5,000 miles or so of needing to be replaced, I'd put brand new ones on before a long road trip like yours.

It sounds like you have all the other bases covered!

Thanks for the extra advice guys. I'm getting new piaa si-tech flat wiper blades (should arrive sometime this week) but i'll keep my old bosch ones as a spare. Everything else will be thoroughly inspected and all fluids definitely topped off before i leave. So far it looks like i will be leaving for this trip as soon as August hits so i got a couple months to slowly fix anything and save up money (i just pray that gas decreases by then. right now its about $3.70 per gallon in Dallas and decreasing!) but my 4runner is averaging 20.2 mpg which i thought wasn't too bad! Of course i'll post pics! Especially if i decide to do any easy trails in the 4runner while in utah!

Trip preparation

Trip preparation

1)Take a look at the serpentine belt, replace it if necessary.

2) Remove the spare tire. Its kind of a PITA to remove and its nice to have a refresher in the daylight in case you need to do it at night, lube the chain that lowers it and make sure its properly inflated.

3) Check your oil and coolant levels and crawl under your truck to check for any leaks.

Items to bring along:

A small toolkit with a basic set of sockets and screwdrivers... pliers and a sharp knife.

Flattened roll of Duck Tape (tons of uses).

An small assortment of replacement fuses.

An small assortment of hose clamps.

A large piece of clear plastic dropcloth (if a power window motor goes out or you find yourself with a broken window, this and the Duck tape will be a lifesaver).

LED headlamp and a flashlight along with some spare batteries.
