4Runner hates the cold!

Like a true southerner, my 4Runner, which has spent its entire life in South Carolina, hates the cold so much!

The v6 sounds like a damn tractor in the morning until it warms up. When it dips below 30 degrees the LCD radio display starts tripping out. Just for fun it likes to throw the evap code due to the gas cap gasket anytime it dips below freezing. Hilariously this morning I climbed in and the cup holder was in pieces!? No idea what happened but it looks like the cold made the plastic extra brittle and the piece holding the two swing arms in place cracked in two.

Of course these are all silly issues and it always gets me where I need to go and never has left me stranded but it cracks me up at how much of a southern personality this truck has :smow:

Weird. Outside of a weak battery mine's had no cold-related issues even at/below 0F.

Also no issues here. Started up and drove like a champ at 5am in northern Montana -35f temps for a week. It was stored outside.

I can't even fathom what that's like, I would expect you have a block heater?

Don't mind the cold (and snow). Gives me an excuse to engage 4Hi when needed.

Motor also feels stronger during winter under my butt dyno. Mother Nature's natural cold air intake.

Only gripe is MPG's tank with winter blend fuel.

Nope, no block heater. I do use Mobil 1 5w30 which has the cold start performance better than most 0w-20 oils. This was also on a 7 year old stock battery.

I agreee on the gas cap though. Mine finally went this winter, $20 on amazon for an OEM cap fixed the issue. Can’t fault a rubber gasket for going bad after 10 years exposed to petroleum fumes. Essentially a wear item.

Weird about your LCD. My light bulb went out a few years back, but a $4 replacement had it back in order.

Zero issues and we've been in 2-3 degree weather with up to -12 wind chills. Slow LCD screens are 100% normal in cold weather, just the nature of the beast. What oil are you running? Maybe the wrong weight for the cold weather since you're used to warmer weather.

30 degrees? a welcome relief, that's 40 degrees warmer than it was here last week.

No cold temp issues here... and we had almost a solid month of well below 20 degree temps.

Got up to -38 here in Alberta a few weeks ago I leave my 4runner outside and it starts up no problem, does takes a bit to warm up though

10^F here in S/W Ontario and my 2000 SR5 v6 4x4 has zero issues.

Key to easy & quick winter starts is:
a) strong battery / I just installed a AGM battery (775 CCA)
b) full synthetic 5w-30 oil / I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with WIX XP filter

When you get into "far minus" degrees there's not a lot of difference in celsius and fahrenheit......-38 celsius is -36.4 fahrenheit, i.e. it's extremely COLD!!!

how old is your oil? you might have an old oil that oil dont flow well anymore. in my case, i change my oil once a year or 10000 miles or before winter time comes so i have good viscosity and good oil even in the coldest time. never had a starting problem. having it warm up for a minute would help i think.
