When I bought my 2000 Limited 2 years ago I never thought to check for a jack. Now just before a trip I decided to check it out and see how it works. Surprise! Nothing in the compartment, just a spare tire that I can't seem to get down if I needed it. Where does one find a jack and related gear? What years will work on mine?

the long rod under the back seat cushion is to lower the spare-insert the round end to engage the lowering mechanism.
Owner's manual should have a diagram to throw you off just a bit- it goes in at a slight angle.

If you dont have a jack or the tools they can be found on eBay pretty cheap.
If youve never owned a Toyota and dont have a manual, I would imagine it would be a mind puzzle to figure out. I found this info on wikianswers:
Locate your tire changing tools...there should be a rod with a rounded hook on the end, and a turning handle to attach to the other end.
Now, go to the back of the truck. In the center (either in the bumper itself or in the body), there is a slotted-shaped hole. Attach the turning handle to the end of the rod, and insert the rod, hook-end first. The curve of the hook needs to mate up with the winch inside the hole (you may need to look in the hole with a flashlight first to see what you're aiming at). Once you've got the hook locked into the winch, just start cranking down and the spare tire will lower to the ground. Once you have it on the ground, you can take the chain out of the middle of the wheel.
You can put the other wheel back on the chain and wind it back up again if needed.

Ummm not exactly....
not sure if there was a redesign midstream on the 3rd gens- but on a 99 the hook end will most definitely not fit in the hole just below the lip of the hatch floor-between floor and bumper (must have hatch open to see it)
It looks to be a round hole-but it is the square end that goes in the hole and engages the "winch" as Big Elk has called it.
In any case just goes to show it is wise to figure this out before you really need that spare.
I believe it was the 2nd gens 90-95 model years that had a keyhole in the bumper or just above it-did not require opening the tailgate-and the hook end did indeed go in there.

Sometimes in life we encounter a pleasant surprise. Thanks everyone for pointing out where my jack was stored. If I had an owners manual I probably could have figured it out but since the used car dealer I bought this 4Runner at is a worthless bunch of liars I still haven't gotten it although it was promised and in writing too. Probably in the mail with all those other checks!:biggrin2:
Now if I could figure out what the empty compartment in the luggage area is on the passenger side I would be totally happy. It's on the sidewall behind the back seat.

Speaking of 4runner jacks, can someone take a picture of exactly where to place the jack on the front. I had a flat tire a while back and couldn't fit my jack where to diagram on the owners manual told me to. I had to use a different jack because my jack was too tall.

Bill, I also just picked up a 2000. I have also wondered what the rear compartment is "intended" for. Mine has two straps that appear as if they are meant to hold a fire extinguisher or...something...
I'm sure I will find my own use, but I wonder what toyota meant it to be for.

I think those straps were for the optional roadside emergency kit iirc. Mine holds a little first aid kit, jumpers, bungees, and ratchet straps.
Evan, I believe the bottle neck jack is supposed to go underneath the lower control arm where it attaches to the frame. I remember that if you look close there is a spot indented specifically for the top of the jack to press against, I just can't be certain exactly where. I'll see if I can get a good pic later today.

That's basically what I had to do when I placed the jack in the wrong location after a blow out on the highway.
I assumed it was under the frame for both the front and the rear. After jacking the rear up and taking off the shreds of tire I noticed the car wasn't high enough to put my spare on. So put the shreds back on, lower the car, place the jack under the rear axle per the manual, and do it again.
But changing a tire on the highway was a first for me and gave me such a rush to get the hell out of there that I had this all done in less than 8 minutes.

I am pretty sure the straps are intended for a foldable emergency triangle. These are required equipment in many countries and I actually have one in there and it fits perfectly in my '99 SR5 rear compartment. I also keep a few flares and a 6V lantern and they have come in handy (to help others--the 4Runner has never broken down on me, or even had a flat in 110K.) My HiLux (Japan built--bought in Brazil) came new with a triangle strapped into a similar setup. Triangles and fire extinguishers are required on-board all cars in Brazil and they come installed at the factory. The extinguishers are a throwback to when 60 per cent of the fleet were air-cooled VW Beatles that liked to catch fire in the tropical heat.
