4Runner Letter Codes?

Kind of a dumb question but I'm in a boring meeting and my mind wandered.

Saw an early 90's vintage Land Cruiser last night and in my head identified it as an FJ-80. Then as I walked towards my 4Runner, I wondered why we don't refer to the different generations as some sort of letter/number code.

Were there such things that for some reason never caught on, or did Toyota for whatever reason not give them an alphanumeric internal model name/number?

The alpha numeric engine/chassis codes for the 4th gen 4runner are:

GRN-210 = V6 2wd 4runner (Hilux Surf)
GRN-215 = V6 4wd 4runner (Hilux Surf)
UZN-210 = V8 2wd 4runner (Hilux Surf)
UZN-215 = V8 4wd 4runner (Hilux Surf)

My hypotheses on why chassis codes haven't caught on with the 4runners?

1. The 4runner was rarely its own thing. It started as an option for the pick-up and then became the North American version of the Hilux surf. It's always shared a chassis (or significant parts of its drivetrain) with something else. i.e. the UZJ-120 Land Cruiser Prado.

2. There are way more options packages on a 4runner than a Land Cruiser. If I know you have an FZJ80 I know nearly everything I need to about your 93-97 Land Cruiser. UZJ100, HDJ70, FJ40, etc. all pretty monolithic production cycles with few distinguishing features other than engine/chassis (with a few exceptions). A UZN215? Is it limited, sport, SR5, with nav? Sunroof? X-reas? etc., etc. Too many variables above and beyond the drivetrain and chassis.

...That's just my opinion though. Since I switched from an 80 series Land Cruiser to a 4th gen 4runner I have often lamented the fact that I can't google search "N215" and find pages upon pages of useful info specific to me and my truck like I could when I would just google "FZJ80 [insert problem]" Maybe we can be trend-setters.
