High Power Alternator install

Hello all....a couple weeks ago a thread was posted about stock electrical cap of the 4r.

Anyways, long story short, Anthony with DC Power chimed in at some point and said that they produced a HP unit but some of the early units they sold encountered install issues with the 3rd party shops that were installing them. He asked if anyone was willing to give it a shot....I said yes for a couple reasons...always willing to help, and second I wanted to increase power for my winch and a planned odyssey battery. Full disclosure..Anthony did not ask me to post anything about this on the forum.

I was able to install it last night. I think I recall you stating that the issue with the last person to try to install was something slightly off.
Because your design does not have the extra tab (see pic with old and new beside each other) I looked up the part number for a 19 vs 2020 (my truck) and they are the same. You also provided a bolt and nut because yours does not use the back tab with the captured nut. I suppose your billet is stronger than the casting of the OE one, so copying the OE design exactly is not required.

Anyways I proceeded with the install and noticed that there was a slight space between the top mounting bolt and the engine mount. The bottom bolts directly into a threaded hole in the engine head or block. What I did was run the bottom bolt all the way in, to the specified torque of 32 lbs. That left a .80 mm gap (measured with feeler gauge) between the upper tab (on the alternator) and the mounting tab on the engine. This may or may not be within tolerances, but I did not feel comfortable running it down as I did not want to tweek the billet front case. I did not have a super thin washer, so I placed a 1 mm copper crush washer in the space and torqued to 32 lbs with the included bolt and polylock nut. Everything looked straight and seems to be working fine. Visual observation of the new belt running at various rpms did not show misalignment or flexing of the unit. The before idle charging volts were at 13.59 all lights and accessories off...the after was 14.15V. I don't know for sure if this meets your expectations. I did not have a way to measure amp output...but as an anecdotal test, I tried to jump start my Land Cruiser LC100 which had a totally dead battery. A week or two ago it took my 4runner running at 2000rpm for several minutes to get the LC to turn over. This morning, the 4runner was able to start the LC running at idle with NO wait time.

Other thoughts.
1. Getting the the stock alternator back bolt (not required on this unit) was not too bad if you know where to look.
2. I replaced the belt while in there with a new OE belt...should have done the idler pulleys too...but oh well.
3. The actual alternator is beautiful (if you are into that sort of thing like me)
4. I will go ahead a install an Odyssey battery now.
5. After the email, Anthony called me and asked for additional measurements which I will provide. He told me I could keep the alternator, which I fully expected to pay for...so that's awesome!
6. I feel good about the install and end result.
7. IMO the .80 mm gap could be a attributed the machining tolerances on the engine mounting point...if it is not on an exactly parallel plane as the other mounting point, this could throw it off slightly.
8. Did some research on DC power and they are certainly legit....youtube them for a factory tour.

I have the very same set-up in my 2012 L.E. since about 2014; 270-XP and Odyssey 34R-1500T! The battery held up for 8 years; just replaced it in Feb of this year... GREAT Set-up! And my 270 tabs are the same e.g., bolt pattern, missing ears... But NEVER had a problem with belt alignment or any other mechanical/electronic anomalies!

I even did a write up on it here

Install was easy, and it fits perfect. No alignment issues and still running strong.

I just bought a 2nd 4runner ('23) and will be looking to upgrade that alternator as well. You can guess where I'll be buying it from.

Glad to hear your 270-XP is holding it down so well! I'm on my 2'nd T4R too; (3'rd GEN SR5), but stock alternator and battery! My next T4R [...I hope] is a 2025 L.E., but I guess we'll have to see the "PROs and CONs" list, before I can make that choice!

That is good to know....re the model of battery...is that the PC1500T? I know battery size has been beat to death on this forum, and searches turn up all kinds of results....but given our similar set up....does the 34r drop right in, or do I need a spacer etc?

I assume the 34 is better than the 24? The odyssey website configurator specs the 24. A link for your specific bat and spacer would be greatly appreciated.

I had a 35_PC-1400 (same fitment as a 24 series) the 1'st time. When it came time to order another one, I called Customer Service, and was told that "it is (unfortunately) NO Longer made!" So I looked around and found the Odyessey 34R_PC-1500T! It sit's about 3/4 of an inch lower from top to bottom... so I just cut a wooden plank, 10" x 7"x 3/4", painted it to protect the wood, and used it as a height spacer; fits right in the tray [no need to buy anything EXTRA]!

I bought it on Amazon, cost: $397.00 w/FREE S&H ...arrived in two days! See photo below: Best to you!

Regarding "post #6" Above,

The EnerSys battery specs are almost ...IMPOSSIBLE to read; even when Enlarged! Here are the Odyssey 35R_PC1500T specs: CCA=850, HCA=1250, (Len)=10.85, (Wid)=6.76, (Hei)=7.88 (Height Includes Terminals); The length and width dimensions refer "ONLY TO" the top panel, NOT the bottom tray area! If you have any question wrt: Fitment of the 34R_PC1500T, Please hit me back here or shoot me a PM..!

We're taking measurements here and seeing if there is a different somewhere, I haven't heard of the spacing issue before so we're investigating it before we pull the trigger.. So still more to come!

[MENTION=83083]rigtec[/MENTION] How long did your first battery last? I have a 34R PC-1500T coming up close to 4 years and its showing only 20% capacity. I filled out a warranty form but have not heard back from them in a week. Just curious what kind of life expectancy these batteries should have?

My "35-PC1400 Odyssey Extreme" lasted 8 Full Years as of 2/23! The ODX-AGM-34R-1500" is new; but I expect No Less than the same! I assume you've checked/Upgraded the cables before condemning the battery(?)!

Thanks! I spoke with them and they are going to warranty it. I boosted the voltage to the correct range and my wiring is all 2/0 gauge. I bought a battery tester and that is how I figured out the battery was no good.

Just echoing another happy customer , lost track of when I did the install but it was years ago and other then recalling 1 nut being a huge PITA cause you had to do it by feel install went well and no issues thus far.
 
Another one!

Just got it installed at Mike's Custom Toys in Grants Pass. Running solid so far. Looking forward to starting to load it up.

EDIT: hammer-crimped cable from Mike's failed. Not going to use them again for electrical work (they had used "pretty" fuse holders with bare cable before this).

270 amp SNAFU

I have a magnuson and dual kings up front with reinforced strut towers so removing factory alt was a NIGHTMARE, and then when I got it out i put them side by side and Im thinking WTF!!! this is the wrong unit its missing parts. turns out the DC Power not only juices you up big, but you do NOT have to mess with rear brackets and side bolts. I didnt have the hardware that came with my 270 and DC is next daying it. so video should be inbound but this link is MONEY!! TY
 
One thing I learned from this experience--don't use a hammer crimp for battery/alternator cables. Get decent cables that are correctly (hydraulically) crimped from a reliable vendor, and not CCA.

We were on a long road trip a couple of weeks ago. Battery warning lamp started to come on intermittently. Hmm. Drive a little more, comes on solid. Fortunately (long story shortened), Scott's in Montrose UT (great guys!) were able to get us back on the road after about an hour on a Friday afternoon. 99% the hammer-crimped cable from the alternator B post to the battery had failed--frayed, overheated (blackened heat shrink).

Replaced with a good cable from a vendor I trust, running fine now.

Hammer crimps might (maybe) be okay for speaker cables, but really don't use them for power cables that can cause an engine fire if they fail.
