Bet this thread gets 10,000 views in the next 24 hours. Let's stay on track. Besides the propeller shaft, are there any other nipples I can/should be greasing up. Does the shaft have nipples, or do I have to get a gun? Would lithium grease suffice for the shaft and other areas?

Do a search. Theres two different types of grease to use and i forget which is which.

Just get a tube of quality grease from the auto parts store and use it on all zerks. I use one of the synthetic greases on all six points. No real reason to get 2 different kinds IMHO.

Thanks for the input everyone, I have picked up a tube of Lucas X-Tra Heavy Duty Grease, and will apply it on the shaft components.

How'd that work out? The manual says two types of grease, one molybdenum disulfide, but the Toyota parts guy said just use any heavy duty kind, and preferably not theirs because of $$$.

I picked up the Lucas and want to know if it's good for my 3rd's drive shaft.
 
Considering this thread is 15 months old, the OP may not get back to you. But I can just imagine his wife running in terror whenever he has his grease gun out...

Yeah, I'm kind of figuring, I just didn't feel like starting a new thread for a single product. Maybe I should since the search only turns up a thread about nipples.

Maritimer, use moly only! Moly is critical in most applications. I am finding that the shaft is still sticking, and further research indicates that molybdenum is very important. I have read that other use moly everywhere, so that is a better option. Alternatively, you can pick up both and use moly and non-moly where required.

I'll try to get some moly for when I re-do it (the new stuff will just squish the old out, right?).

The Toyota shop just said use a good high pressure grease, and not to worry about the two specs from the manual. He said they don't at the shop.

I didn't use that Lucas stuff, but instead found a good high pressure Lithium #2 NLGI.

The important thing right now is that a bit of bucking has gone away. It needed lubed bad.
 
Maritimer, you should refrain from over filling, as the seals will get damaged. The grease will deplete over time, or you can always unscrew the zerks and try driving around, which will force some, not all, back out. Molybdenum is important as it will still provide lubrication if there is very little grease remaining, preventing seizing of the shaft.

I am an Amsoil man (for the engine), but cannot find anything other than mobil 1 moly grease, which sucks, as I am not a fan of their products. I use lucas grease in many places, but lucas does not provide a moly fortified grease (at least in Toronto).

I was confused about the slip as it seemed to keep taking grease. I think I stopped at about ten pumps. If I re-lube in 5k I shouldn't have any trouble drying out.

I usually keep a very close eye, and pump until I see expansion at the joint. If my pump gets really stiff, then I have gone too far. You cant really go by number of pumps, as you cannot tell how much grease is within the joints. Partsource and Napa both carry the Mobil1 Moly Fortified NLG2. CrappyTire stopped carrying it, and now only stock Motomaster stuff.

Very interesting, as in the 2005+ it lists both types. Could it be that they received too many complaints regarding dry/seizing propeller shafts? I know there is a difference between the v6 and v8, but it would make sense to keep the lubes consistent.
