4runner Question

I hope this is in the right section of the forums.

I had a question about 4runners and I was hoping someone on these forums would be kind enough to answer...

I am looking to purchase my first 4runner tomorrow. It is a 96' SR5 V6 4x4.. going for 4500 dollars. Everything on the vehicle seems perfect. But it has 170,000 miles on it. My question: Is buying a 4runner with that many miles on it a mistake? I hear they last upwards of 250,000 miles generally, is that true? I just dont want to buy something that is gonna die within a year. If it was kept well, and I keep it well, it has the potiental to last pretty long correct? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Do you have access to the full maintenance records? If it has clearly been taken care of, then I say you're good. But if the records are sketchy, I'd say pass.

Just keep a savings account for maintenance and know a good mechanic and you will be fine. But your fears are justified somewhat. These trucks are more reliable than other vehicles such as Explorers or Durangos which are no longer on the roads because they are dead. That said expect to some serious maintenance between 175K and 250K.

This could be so many things. By 200,000 you can expect to have about 75% of the issues highlighted in the buying guide. Rear diff seals [x], LBJ [x], new radiator [x], steering rack [x].

If you are lucky and treat it well then you will not need any engine or tranny work before 250K but the things listed in the buying guide will likely need work before you get to 250K miles.
