My 4runner is shaking/vibrating on acceleration in 2wd. Checked the rear U-joint, and it has about 0.8-1mm of play if I'm rough with it. Here's the thing, though: both my front CV's are shooting grease everywhere, but I don't see a tear in either of the boots. Do those still turn in 2wd? Could they contribute to the violent shaking I'm experiencing on acceleration?

Yes, CV's turn as the vehicle moves, even in 2WD. They are built into the front axle. There just isn't power applied via the CV's in 2WD. Is the vehicle shaking while in 4WD? I ask because you seem specific to 2WD. Shaking in only 2WD would eliminate the CVs*. But the CV's shouldn't be causing your issue. Your ujoint is likely the culprit. Just unbolt your driveshaft from the transfer case and rear diff and service the ujoints. All you need is a press, time, and the FSM.

I had to do my ujoints a few months ago due to bad vibrations. Pressing the double cardan can be a PITA, but its an overall easy job.

I ordered the part and it should be in today. Haven't checked it in 4WD because I haven't needed it since I started getting the vibrations. I'll report back when the new U-joints are installed.

Not sure if you made a typo, but shaking in 2 wheel drive would absolutely not rule out U-joints.

YEAH! Shaking in 2WD would point towards bad Ujoints. I meant CVs, not ujoints in the previous post. I fixed it. Haha, thanks for the catch Blackcat.

So I'm just curious, but what was the pricing with the employee discount? You can PM me if you want. I ask because I know someone that works for Toyota, but I'm not sure if it would be worth asking him and making him go out of his way.
 
It turns out that the issue was the double cardan joint at the front of the driveshaft. It straight up broke in half. New Driveshaft fixed the issue!
