4Runner Saved My Life

This is a sad post and a happy post.

A little while back I was run off the road by a driver coming at me in my lane. They were over the double-yellow...I suspect they were texting. I swerved to avoid a head-on collision. This is the last thing I remember.

I ended up smashing a mail box and continued into a front yard where I managed to thread my 4Runner through a car-sized gap between two trees. The drivers-side front tire hit the left tree, was ripped off and thrown 60 feet. That impact forced the car to the right into the other tree and smashed the passenger side to bits. Thankfully I was alone in the car. Continuing forward, the car took a nose dive and the wheel-well of the missing tire dug into the ground, causing me to flip over, hood first. Air bags deployed. I was wearing my seat belt. First thing I remember is crawling out of the car through the passenger side window. I walked away from this! Called 911.

I was walking around, taking photos, talking to people who stopped. Then EMS showed up and I agreed to get checked out. I was pretty banged up but no permanent damage. The 4Runner didn't fare so well. I knew immediately the car was totaled. My baby. Gone forever:hurt:

The car or driver that forced me off the road was never found.

Fast forward a couple months and I'm back in business with a 2006 Sport Edition V8. She's getting the same goodies as my 2001 Sport...Old Man Emu and BFG All Terrain's. I've been meaning to write this for awhile and now that I have a new 4runner with OME/BFG, it feels like the right time.

At the end of the day it was just a car. It did what it was supposed to do and protected me. I walked away from the accident and I owe that to my Toyota 4Runner.

:cry2: WOW I'm glad your safe!

I feel the same way with my 95 4runner, it saved my Wife and 9 month old daughter in a t-bone collision, it did EXACTLY what need to be done, it saved them from someone else. I sure miss it.

Good to hear it protected your family!
They are strong trucks! I felt like a piece of me was missing without a 4Runner in my life. So glad to have one again!

Holy wow! I'm glad you are ok and walked away. Makes me glad I drive Toyotas! And good to see you are in another 4Runner!

Be glad you were able to walk away. I don't think I have ever seen a drive shaft snapped like that.

Hoping you are liking the V8. Keep your eyes peeled for the idiots.

Really glad you are around to post this! That was one hell of a crash. I swear, our phones will be the death of us. Everyone thinks it won't happen to them, or that they are a good enough driver to do both. I am glad that you were aware enough to notice that idiot. That horrible crash might have saved both of your lives.

Take care beother. Glad you got a new Yota.

OMG! Although it's a coveted 3rd gen Runner, it's just a truck.
You can always replace it as you have.
You however, cannot and thankfully that never entered the equation.
Glad your okay

Glad you are safe.
I am amazed how good these 4runner's at saving people's life. I remember another t4r member somewhere in Houston heading east had to stop due to fog on freeway and an 18 wheeler rear-ended him at 60 MPH or so but the 4runner driver was able to walk out from the overturned runner.

Now it is time to buy a dash cam.

Wow! Glad you're OK, those photos are hard to picture someone just walking away from, you are a lucky man!

On the bright side, you got handed a reason to upgrade from the old style to the KO2s!

How you like the KO2 275's? Do you wish you went 285? Tomorrow is tire day for the '06 and I can't decide between 275/70r17 and 285. I installed the OME kit from Toytec today. I'm concerned about rub with the 285's and extra trimming. I also have Spidertrax 1.25in spacers.

Would love your opinion!

I really like the KO2's in 275. I can't really say if I wish I had gone with the 285, I was never really thinking about going with that size. I am not running wheel spacers but I plan to get some soon. I have minor rubbing on the front of my wheel well liner when turning in reverse. I just need to unscrew them and push them in a little bit, I haven't gotten around to it yet. Enjoy the new rubber, I really like the look and feel of them.

Holy cow. Unreal that you were not only able to walk away from that crash, but were able to walk away relatively unscathed.

Sorry you lost 3rd gen, but glad to hear you're in a new set of wheels.

Stay safe and enjoy the new ride.
