4Runner size?

So, if We get a 6th Gen that remains a ''True'' 4Runner what will happen to the platform? Will it continue to grow!?.......I would like to see it stay the same or ''shrink'' at the approach angles and bump the 3.5 to a 4.0 again. If it goes unibody and 3.5 We are doomed:barf: If you had asked me if a Durango was bigger, I would have said ''absolutely!'' (My Durango with a lift looks SMALLER!)View attachment 257214

Honestly they can do whatever they want just as long as it's not a unibody in my opinion.

The size of the 5th gen is perfect to me. A lot of people think Toyota spit out some monstrosity with the 5th gen, but I think it's only 1"x1"x1" bigger than the 4th gen.

I went from a 3rd gen to 5th gen. Loved the 3rd gen, but I hated how narrow it was. A center console in a truck/suv should have room for more than 1 arm. The additional width of the 5th gen is a huge improvement IMO.

Compare the latest 4Runner to the latest Durango. The Durango is bigger. Pretty much every car company's Trucks/SUVs are getting bigger on average.

I don't know that I would want it bigger, but definitely would not want it any smaller. One thing that kept me away from the 4Runner in the past was the earlier models were much too small and cramped.

Compare the latest 4Runner to the latest Durango. The Durango is bigger. Pretty much every car company's Trucks/SUVs are getting bigger on average.

Although the 4Runner actually has the same/larger cargo capacity.

I wouldn't mind a couple more inches of headroom, a front passenger seat that doesn't put your head into the sunroof, and maybe an inch or 2 longer on the wheelbase to improve legroom in the second row.

I would actually like to see the 6th gen shrink a little bit (I also came from a 3rd gen), but believe that is highly unlikely. I think it much more likely that the 6th gen gain in size as that is typically the way most vehicles go. I do notice as I drive around town that the 5th gen is the same size as full sized pickup trucks 1 or 2 generations old.

I did the same, and absolutely agree with your statement about the 3rd gen being more nimble. That was partly due to the fact that it went from a compact SUV to a midsizer.

Not only is the the 5th gen bigger in every dimensions, but also considerably heavier...and so it loss all the nimbleness and agility of the earlier models.

I'm too lazy to go dig for all the numbers, but my guess is that the Durango has a bit better passenger volume, especially in the 2nd row considering the unibody construction.

I actually thought about getting a RT Durango or even waiting for the SRT8 before pulling the trigger on the 4Runner. Ultimately decided I couldn't live without offroad capability and didn't want a car that loses about 70 to 80% of its value in 5 years (Durango depreciation is HORRID).

It's not THAT bad. We had a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado extend cab for 8 years... I agree that full size trucks now are huge (and in all fairness, I don't think the Silverado is one of the largest ones), but still .

For reference:

2004 Chevrolet Silverado Extend Cab: 227.7" length, 78.5" wide
2017 Chevrolet Silverado Double (which took place of Extend) Cab: 230.0" length, 80" wide
2017 4Runner: 190.2" length, 75.8" wide

I remember what a pain in the butt parking our 2004 Silverado was at times, especially when we lived in the Northeast. A 4runner is not a small vehicle, but it's still not super wide and definitely not particularly long (especially for the amount of volume in it).

Correct. It also has the new Chrysler/Fiat reliability.

Edit: I have test drove them, and they drive and handle really well.

So do I, especially since it's a very inefficient use of the vehicle's "footprint". Rounding everything off cuts into the interior space. I want as much room inside as possible.

Well, VW has killed our chance of a Diesel in the short term IMO. Rather than a V-8, I think they should lighten the 4Runner and get the torque back that the 3.5 lost....I just think the 3.5 would be death in a 4Runner at its current size and weight. I drive a 1st Gen Hilux 4X4 shortbed so I'm used to being ''Balled'' up in the cab! I don't want them to shrink the 4Runner too much but ''tighten'' the overall length and width while keeping the interior size the same.....mostly the front and rear overhang could be reduced. Off-Road ability is why I buy 4Runners and the BOF is critical to that as well. DON'T screw the Tacoma and 4Runner up for those of us who want to ''Tweak'' our Trucks Toyota!eace:
