Lived in the bay area most of my life. Lived in Oakland for about 7 years. Oakland is getting better. Downtown is improving a lot of new restaurants and business are moving in there. Is it good, probably not but not any where near as bad as it use to be. Its like any where else it has its pros and cons. My buddy had same thing happen to him about 3 months ago while having dinner in downtown. Sorry to hear for the loss of stuff. I wouldn't leave anything out in my trunk in Oakland still. Even in the decent parts.
 
Same thing happened to me in San Francisco in December. Same window. Got away with $4k in camera equipment. Luckily they missed my work laptop. Home owner's insurance covered the full amount less my deductible.
 
Sucks to see this happen, yet sadly it doesn't surprise me as I grew up in Los Angeles. I've had someone take a razor blade to the soft top of my old S2000. They jacked the stereo, shift knob and battery under the hood. Then months later my B16 swapped CRX was stolen and never recovered. What really drives me nuts is that the wife regularly forgets her phone in the car! I'm just waiting for the day that some scumbag decides to bash a hole through the window for a stupid phone.
 
One of my co-workers was just in the bay area last week and got mugged walking down the street for 5$. That place seems out of control... Time for a crack down by the local police, but then there would be outrage for profiling... So frustrating.
 
Very sad to hear my friend. This is probably to late now, but a few months back some one tried to break the passenger side window on my daughters 2014 Maxima. They broke into a a few cars but were not able to break her window?

Whatever they had used which appeared to be a rock actually gouged the glass in like 3 places and put a ding at the top of the door but never broke the glass. What sucked is that I still had to have the window replaced and re-tinted.

When I went to my regular tint man, I asked the guy how is it the glass did not break? He said the tint actually reinforces the glass. Either it's true or she was real lucky???

So you can have ALL the windows tinted/filmed even with a 50% tint which would make it harder to break the glass?
 
That's exactly why I installed 3M Scotchshield Security tint. Double the price of a regular tint.

There is a group buy for the arb drawers.

I went that route after the 2 time it happened to me and so did my brother after his fj go 3 windows smashed, they couldn't pull the bag out of the small fj windows so they broke 3

Small investment up front but if it deters them from doing it again it's worth it in time

Best aftermarket investment thus far for my t4r. Everything you mentioned, besides the Mac Pro wouldve fit in the Console Vault. Literally takes 5 minutes to install with the correct tools. Next time shove the Mac under driver or pass. seat as well. Sorry for your loss of materials.

Good news is you are safe. Moreover, whomever stole your belongings is most likely a petty thief (or dopefiend) who has no desire nor experience in identity theft.

The tow trucks are crazy too, I somehow managed to talk a meter maid into lowering my truck off a flatbed in Hayes Valley (SF) for a simple expired meter.. wrote me a citation instead.

Anyways, I basically never leave anything of value in my vehicles, at least not accessible to a quick smash and grab. I'm a 5th generation Californian and my family keeps a nice written, photographed, and oral history of the area.. it sucks to witness what's gone on over the years relative to how it used to be and what it could have been. My brother is staying in the area but I'm looking to move out of state. If you can check out the south bay, I'm not sure where you're at exactly but it tends to be sunnier down here with good food and a little more open than the peninsula or east bay. Sorry this happened, unfortunately you're one of many.

I've been coming to the bay almost my whole life, off and on. I'll tell you what, it's definitely not the same place I remember. Even 8ish years ago when my GF went to Berkley. Something really weird is in the water or something. I wonder if it's that or if it's just that I'm hitting my 30s now and getting more mature.

There's nothing like this in Denver that I remember (my hometown st louis, yes). But in STL, the break ins were almost always at night when people are sleeping. I'm here scratching my head...'what's the big deal about SF again?'. I'm still trying to find the cool pockets. I go north and east and south for the mountains, which are great. Sometimes I wonder if people here just convince themselves that the bay is amazing, just because they heard it through the herd-vine, or actually think it is.

Ayup, last time I was down in Oakland about a year ago had my rear window smashed in front of my girlfriend's apartment just outta spite I think. Only thing in the back was my tool bag but they didn't even grab that. I'd say the Bay Area has gotten out of control but I've been hanging out around there the last 30 years or so and have had multiple break-ins, a stolen car, etc. etc. Shit be wild, yo. American big city though, and not really any different than the years I spent in New York or Detroit. Super bummer though, sorry you had to go through the experience.
 
Sucks man! Sorry to hear. Stories like this make me happy I left the city 8 yrs. ago.

Two of my work rigs were broken into on two separate occasions, right in my driveway. Nearly $20,000 worth of items stolen.

The only suggestions I have, which is what I used, is adding an inland marine coverage to your policy.

Yep, you're right. Police are frustrated with the lack of support by their community. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Too bad they made that city a sanctuary city.

Sorry to hear about this OP. It's a horrible feeling for sure.
