4Runner Sport Adding Navigation

Hello we are looking into buying a 4runner Sport 4th gen 05-07 after rolling our Xterra. If we were to get a Sport with a regular CD player can we just switch that out for a Navigation unit or is there other stuff you have to get it make it work. If it will work, which navigation unit is should we get. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks have a blessed day/night.

The non-JBL radio 4Runners can use the analog output Toyota JBL navigation system (aka Camry nav), the Scion Navigation System and I believe the nav from the current generation Corolla.

If the 4Runner has a JBL radio, it'll need the digital output Toyota JBL navigation system (aka Solora nav).

if you want factory NAV.........

As uneek said, if there is a "JBL" label anywhere on your stereo, then can get pretty much any "toyota factory NAV". Just make sure it looks like the picture below. If you don't have a JBL, then you will need a NAV unit that is not digital (look for one that is from a RAV4 or Camry). It is basically plug and play, do a search and you will find a lot of information on how to get all the gizmos to work. If it were me, I'd stick to getting a 2006+ 4Runner (slight improvements over the 05, and doing this modification is easily to do (you can get the bluetooth to work without much pain).

Eclipse nav systems are plug-n-play for the 4Runner also. That's because they make the OEM systems as well. I put an Eclipse navigation system in my 4Runner and even the steering wheel buttons worked perfectly without any modifications at all.

Well that did not work like that for me… power and audio connections are plug in play, but not wheel control and you also have to find side brackets...
I am the process of installing Eclipse AVN-50D (I have a post just under this one: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/audio-electronics/81367-eclipse-avn-50d-installation-questions.html ) and I am still trying to find wiring diagram\info for wheel control for the 4Runner and AVN unit….

I installed an Eclipse 6620. The original radio brackets bolted right on to the unit annd all the connectors plugged right in without any adapters. Everything worked perfectly. Is the 50D a single DIN unit? Is it an older unit? The reason I ask is because I just figured all Eclipse units would be plug-n-play like mine was.

Also, I'm confused about your connection problems. I opened the link and the first post says "This unit plugs directly into stock NON JBL radio harness. There is no wiring required. Pull your old radio out and plug this one in. Thats it!! Also has steering wheel control capability. Unplug your steering wheel controls from your stock radio and plug it directly into this unit and thats it. No adapter required."

But it doesn't work on your 4Runner?

Mounting brackets do work, I am taking about side trim panels that needs to be added to cover ½ inch gaps on each side of Eclipse (Front panel of the Eclipse is not as wide as OEM Radio).

Apparently that post is not 100% correct.. just as I said on my first reply (see above): power and audio connections are plug in play, but not wheel control…
Obviously if you do not have wheel control or you just do not connect them and you do not care about ½ inch gaps on the sides then AVN-50D is plug in play..

I am sure it is not just on my 4Runner.
