Hi, When I go to turn my 4Runner on today it wouldn't start. I had to start the car up for the second try and it starts.... don't know what is going on.

EDIT: So today (1/7/11) it was cold out and I went to remote start the car the starter motor didn't do anything it made a spark sound and nothing happend.

**EDIT #2: Just replaced the new contacts into my starter! Now it runs so perfect now! Special thanks to CoMarc and DH4Runner for showing me what the problem was! Again thank you guys.**

Contacts in the starter are going bad. Search 'starter repair kit' and you'll find how to fix it. I'm a total newb at car maintenance and I was able to do it in a few hours. There r multiple threads on this here and other places. Example http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/62409-your-starter-going-quick-easy-repair.html

If you decide to do this yourself, take note of how you wiggled the starter out so you can tetris it back in the same way.

Oh, I got the kit on eBay for 30 somethin bucks.

good luck

Ok thanks I'm going to get some new contacts for the starter sometime next year or this month hopefully.

Replacing the contacts in the starter are easier than one would usually think. I've done them and I'm not mechanically inclined. See my signature for a write-up I did on it that's pretty simple (with the right tools). If you're just getting a clicking noise when trying to start and no loss in light output then it definitely is your contacts. Good luck!

So is it turning over when you attempt to start or just clicking or no noise at all? Just wondering since you thought it may be spark plugs? If it's turning over and not starting, I'd say a weak fuel pump.

Deffinitely check all electrical connections such as the permanant hot line connecting the starter to the battery. Also the starter relay in the engine compartment fuse box.

What does turning over mean?

Try turning the key to the on position, but dont turn the truck on. This will prime the lines if you check valve is bad.

But I would try narrowing down the cause instead of purchasing tons of new parts just cause someone said so.

long start like eh eh eh eh then it starts

mileage: 96,000

Then your starter is fine. If you turn the key and you get nothing at all, or a click only then you got bad contacts.
Turning over and not starting is another issue altogether. You could just need a tune up. Could be any one of a number of issues. Does it turn over nice and strong or does it sound weak like the battery is dead?

battery is not dead (replaced it in Feb 2010) but it does sound weak.

Same issue but worse

I am not entirely sure what is going on and what I did but I am at a loss on what to do next. I was changing the oil and changing a dash light that had gone out, just regular maintenance. As I was refueling the engine with new oil, I noticed that one of the ground wires that is supposed to be connected from the body to the battery had come loose. So I attached it and didn't think much of it. When I went to try and start the car though, it would only click. So I went through the steps you are supposed to, check fuses, check relays, check battery and check starter. I have gone through all fuses and I can't find one that is out. I replaced the starter relay, I replaced the starter itself, I replaced the battery. And it still only clicks once, not sure what I did but it is winter and not having my 4Runner is screwing up my snowboarding time.

If anyone has any ideas that I can try to get it going again I could really use them because I can't drive it to the shop to get it fixed as the car won't start or anything. Please help!!
