4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium vs. TRD Pro

KDSS is NOT available on the TRD Pro. It's only available as a factory option on the TRD Off Road (otherwise known as the Trail Edition in previous years). For 2017, Barcelona Red should be available for all versions, as well as the sliding rear cargo tray (IF the factory put it in at the time of manufacture).

I see more post reading and internet research in your future.

It is very possible that your will need to look around at other dealerships and/or travel some distance to get the exact vehicle you're looking for. Or bide your time and wait until one swims by...

Sunroofs leak - they all do eventually. If you want to get in to a truck that has a wet seat after a rainstorm, get a truck with a sunroof.
Don't let anyone tell you different!

Go with the TRD Pro - simple is better - plus they have a cool grill and red coils on the front shocks!!

I get that it's not an option on the TRD Pro. But when I go to the Toyota website to do a build for either the TRD Off-Road or the Off-Road Premium, there is not an option to do Red, KDSS, and the sliding rear cargo tray. The only option for the KDSS and sliding rear cargo tray is for the white color.

Talk with your local dealer. Each region has odd packages, I was able to order a late model 2016 Blue, Premium with KDSS but the sliding cargo tray was only available in the white, odd but that's the way it was up here.

I've had a 2002 4Runner since April of 02, and the sunroof has never leaked... We have a 2012 Quest with 2 sunroofs that have never leaked. I'm not sure what sort of experience you have with sunroofs besides hearing someone say they all leak.

My DD is a 99 Camry with a sunroof. Zero leaks.

And I agree. If you want to keep a vehicle mostly stock then a TRD Pro is a great choice, however toss a couple grand suspension at an off road and you can get a lift and far better suspension than the TRD Pro, and still be cheaper. Other than cosmetic and suspension there's zero difference, and the stock TRD Pro suspension is still crappy compared to most aftermarket. It's just less crappy than the non pro suspension lol.

Things change it appears. When I bought mine the end of November the only Trail or Trail Premium they had was red. It had been there over two months and they were happy to give me a deal on it and see it gone. The salesman said nobody wanted red and especially not one with KDSS. Maybe if they'd washed it during the two months they had it someone would have taken it. They cleaned it up for me and poured a bottle of Armorall on each tire. It was running off in puddles. I got a free hat, too.

The other two local dealers didn't have any Trails or TEPs at all.

It all depends on what you want. For me, I liked the sr5 premium features, I wanted leather with a sunroof and no JBL sound system or smart key (too integrated for me) I want to be able to change it out down the road if I so desire. For me, the rear locker and down grade from leather wasn't worth the extra money, an ARB is like $1700 installed with a compressor.... a lot less than the $3k price tag for an e locked model at the dealership. I figured I could add a lift and locker down the road for less than the sticker price of the trd offroad model. I have been very happy with my choice.

May be a little further than you want to go to get it but last Monday I drove a red try pro at Teton Toyota in Idaho falls. It was not spoken for at the time. It did not have the slide out tray. 1k over msrp. They also ordered my a cement one so I believe they could still get you what you want. Different dealers have different priority when requesting vehicles depending on their sales trend( or so I was told) so what may be unavailable to one dealer may be available to another. Might be worth a shot to call them about the off-road if that's what you want.

Interesting. Every time I stop by Charles Maund they have a red 4Runner.
All are 4x4 that I look at. They are usually SR5s, but I have seen trail versions as well. The trails are always stock and the SR5s have usually been configured to look like TRD models.

I have had many vehicles with moonroofs. None ever leaked.

Yeah, this is the problem. There's no way i hell they'll trade a TRD Pro, esp here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area b/c they can sell the TRD Pro in literally a day. There are a couple of Off-Road Premium's in the red but they don't have the KDSS. The thing that is pissing me off with the dealer is this. I know there were 2 TRD Pro's in Houston. 1 sold. My local dealer is trying to wheel/deal to get the TRD Pro up here but we all know that ain't going to happen. It pisses me off b/c they won't tell me what dealer has the other TRD Pro. I've thought about just offering my sales guy $100 if he'll just STFU and tell me who has it and I'll drive down there and get it.

Have you gone to all the Toyota dealers websites in Houston and looked? There aren't THAT many (I lived there a couple years)

That's what I did last night. Looked at everything in the DFW area and Houston. I went to UH so I'm familiar with the area. Nada. The Off Road Premium in red w/KDSS is almost the unicorn as the TRD Pro.

I finally got a nice girl in sales at the Toyota in Katy. She was nice and admitted that yes, they can see the inventory for their area, they can see the Gulf States region. She was cool and looked it up, confirmed only 1 TRD Pro but it's cement. That's what pisses me off, a couple of the other dealers figured since I wasn't going to give them business, they wouldn't do a quick 30 second courtesy to tell me where it might be. This girl is looking for the Off Road Premium and is going to call me back, but I'm pretty sure I'm SOL. And I don't think you can order the '17 for this either. Problem is that they have no idea when they'll be able to order the '18's for anything, so it's a sit back and wait game. I could have sworn I read one site that mentioned the '18's won't even be out until around Feb.

My sales guy called and said why not have them just bring in an off road premium in the red and then I could just have the suspension done on my own. How would an aftermarket setup compare to the KDSS? I know the KDSS is a sort of different bird of it's own feather, so it'd be hard to compare apples to oranges. Thanks for everyone's input!

I like the black wheels. I'm coming from having a Mustang & then 2 BMW's, so it's my first venture into the 4Runner game. Primarily was looking to have something that can get me in/out of muddy crap at the gun range. But it'd also be neat to be able to do some level of off roading, and I'm guessing the upgraded suspension would help. I'm just not real sure what advantage/disadvantage of the KDSS is.

If you're on the road more then KDSS will ride better with less body roll.

I had the same dilemma before going with the Pro. I wanted a moon roof also but after spending extra on a Premium to make it look like a Pro you would have spent the same as a Pro with less resale value if that's important to you. If the car didn't work out for me then I would want to be able to sell it with minimal depreciation.
