Not sure if popularmechanics is a trustworthy source of accurate information (who knows these days ... right?). Form the article you could suspect Cali has it too.

Go to eia.gov and search there. They will even give the dates and a map and the blend. They are the one who regulate it so this would be as good as it gets for sourcing


Why am I even trying to help you guys understand why you are getting subpar gas mileage in the winter?
Jeez, you could suspect? Why would a respected magazine lie especially if it is apolitical topic like this?

I refuse to fill up within 50 miles of Houston because they fall under the big city blend requirement. Regardless of time of year. It has nothing to do with Octane rating.

We've already butted heads once, and I do not enjoy doing so. But when someone is trying to give out information they have RESEARCHED, why does someone have to argue the point with them? I don't know of anyone in this forum who wants to put out misinformation for simple entertainment purposes. Yes, some tongue in cheek stuff gets posted, but it is so obviously ridiculous when it happens that it can be discounted at the time it is posted.

In the Baton Rouge, LA area, depending on EPA air quality readings in the area determine what blend of gasoline is to be sold and utilized in motor vehicles to reduce exhaust emisions.
IE: Blended fuels that contain more or less ethanol & still keeping the same octane ratings.

It's always been my experience that the more corn juice (ethanol) they put in gasoline, the less MPG I can acheive.
How do I know this you may ask....Because we can still buy non-ethanol fuel at a few places. I still purchase non-ethanol fuel for my generator, lawn mowers, blower, weedweater and chain saw.
So I tried it in my T4R and it definately liked it better, but also was more expensive!

My snipping was related to talking about gas mileage and then we get a random reply about winter gas. Rather than mention "it may be because of winter gas" in which case I would have said "what the hell is that" and looked it up, but instead we get:

"Guys, do a bit of research please! I have authored several posts on winter gas"

So again, because I am not familiar with this, I did not relate my gas mileage versus my Tacoma, to something I had not heard of before. Therefore, the thought of googling "winter gas" never crossed my mind.

In the future I will exhaust all search options for stuff I am not aware of, which will be difficult, or I will ask on here "What should I search for before I inquire of something" to try and avoid fallout.

Lol. No harm, no foul. I count myself as an MPG kind of guy and I can't get mine under 17 on a regular basis. It will depend on your driving style and conditions more than anything else. On my long drives to work I have to contend with 75mph 2 and 4 lane traffic, as well as mildly hilly terrain. I have seen 21+ mpg on ONE tank of gas. That included a 100 mile loop around a mapped scenic motorcycle route and I only averaged about 40mph during the loop. I think I could probably squeak 18 - 18.5 out of it on a long trip over level 70 mph highways. Maybe. I tried to make a mileage trip going home a couple weeks ago in the middle of the night. I held it under 65 since traffic was light, and I foot throttled up the hills instead of using the cruise control. I still couldn't get better than 17.5. I know the roof rack and lifted front haven't helped things either.

I will admit this thing was sluggish as a pig out of the dealership, but it has since "learned" my driving style, which is a little more sporty than it was originally mapped for. I am sure that has had some affect on MPG because it probably raised my shift points a few hundred rpm. The only way I will probably get some back is to disconnect the battery and allow the ECU to restore to factory defaults or have it reprogrammed at the dealer. But that would also mean I would have to drive it like a Grandpa (which I will be in a couple weeks), and I'm just not ready to do that yet.

I still can't figure out how a guy who drives in either UP or DOWN WV can get 19.5, but maybe 1E drives like a grandpa......

Stock. 37 psi P rated tires. Consistency. Lots of highway miles. Run it light with no extra weight.

Wow, kids calm down here! I am seeing another trend not only in this post but others. That 1. Search it yourself or 2. Sacastic replies or 3. Unmeaning to be unhelpful or 4. Will leave this one out. It may be bettr in the future to reference ings instead of being gruff and down right dirty seemingly tired of the new posters out there on this forum. Which may be unannounced toyou 1. Know how to use a forum 2. Have been around as long as you. To respond similarly to it as such.

I have posted many articles on this such thing and have researched it in the past. Most likely it is winter gas causing the difference in milage. IE Winter gas has a higher Ethanol percentage vs summer blend. See the articles below for more information and consumption.

To either side there is no need to be a dick about it. We are all here becuase we either like the 4Runner or own one and want more information on the things we can do to it. I for one know from other forums and years of bing pn them IE fjcruiserforums, landrover forums, pinzgauer forums, different gun forums, UsualSuspects.net... That you will always get some similar questions and that simple link to a previous discussion that could have been hidden by the vast amount of posts is much more helpful that using a search function. If you reference something like writing a report put a link to what ever the heck you are referencing instead of starting hey dummy look it up, I wrote about it. Well what did you write please, interested I would like to see said artcles or the such to further my knowledge on the subject. Just as my know,edge of the Medical or Firearm side or experiences may be of use to you.

I dont want to sing kumbaya so lets arty: on and get back to stuff that is more worth while.

Easy there tiger! We appreciated your posts. I would just throw the popular mechanics link on there for the first post for whoever never heard of it and needs a credible link and drop the "DO YOUR RESEARCH GUYS" since this obviously isn't very common knowledge, and your good! i live in southern California, up until not long ago i didn't even know winter gas existed. My 4runner mpg is considerably less than my '12 tacoma on the exact same gas and driving conditions.

Also this post is relevant. Looks like we all agree on the winter gas thing being the reason for decreased mileage but what about the difference in [MENTION=117561]drsus[/MENTION] trucks running the same gas at the same time period? (Unless this goes back to the weight issue)

Winch mounting option TRD Pro, no bumper, behind lower fascade. What is the thought on this? Is this there any difference between the models fascades that woukd warrant the mounts not work on the PRO? Also what is the most popular option being used here to mount a winch behind the fascade using a Hawse fairlead ad synthetic rope?

I would most likely be using a Warn M8000 or 9.5xp. I am open to other winch sugestions that would fit this need as It has bee years since I have purchased a winch. Timeframe is the next 6months. Would like in vehicle winch contol capability. Thanks.
