4runner TRD Pro

X2 brother! It's possible the gen-5 runners might also become desirable commodities moving forward.....rugged good looks, bullet-proof engine and drivetrain, BOF construction, japan built.....similar to the FJ's of the 70's and early 80's. Time will tell, but I'm putting my $ down on a '17.:biggrin2:

Yeah man...every time I drive this thing it just exudes quality. I am falling in love with this thing. I test drove a Tacoma,a Tundra, and an SR5 back to back...and I got to say this 4Runner Trail is the best Toyota has out right now, barring maybe the Landcruiser, IMO. I don't care what anyone says, I can feel a difference between the various factories. Driving these vehicles back to back reveals that the Japan built one is of higher quality. Again this is all subjective but I could tell the difference. YMMV.

Now that the reality of the Obama/EPA regulations are taking hold of the manufacturers, we are in for many unwelcome changes to all the vehicles we love.

EDIT: I am friends with my salesman. He told me the if he had a choice he would buy the 4Runner over the Landcruiser. He said the markup on the Landcruiser is over $8000 and it is all about tech with that truck. The markup on all the other vehicles in the Toyota lineup is around $3000.

Hi all,

Has someone experienced a really annoying noise (like metal on metal, rattle or even like if the door was open) when driving over bumpy roads? It seems like something inside of the interior hatch panel is loose. PLEASE HELP!! this noise is driving me crazy.

Rear hatch? Mine made a similar sound and it appears that the latch wasn't completely secured around the striker and caused a metal on metal noise over rough roads.

Open up the rear and put a couple of wraps of tape (I used electrical) around the striker (u-shaped piece of metal the hatch hooks on to). That stopped my rattle.

From what I've read it could be one of two things:
Likely: C-clip on upper balljoint (details)
Unlikely: Front shock in cold weather (details)

The way you (and a couple others) described it, it sounds exactly like how others described the loose C-clip. The c-clip should be tight. If it isn't, there's the cause for your rattle.

I spent some time out there tonight...tinkering with it...and the rattle off of these things is pretty loud...like a quarter inside a soda can

Huh? I don't how you came to that conclusion? Anyway...no. The dealer I went to did not have any Trails so I test drove an SR5. Then ordered a Trail.

With "high mileage" (50k on the clock)? Sure! My 4th Gen has 229k on it and is still ticking.
My 5th Gen TRD Pro had 77k when I got it. I didn't worry about it in the least.

The thing that would worry with that one is the last reported oil change at 8k and nothing after that. Did the owner do it himself? Did he skip an oil change or two? What receipts are available?

Given that you can another Inferno up for pretty much the same price (albeit some distance away), I would keep looking.
For example, here's a brand new Trail at 37k MSRP.

What is the warranty on the TRD pro? Whats the overall consensus on an extended warranty? I would normally never consider it with a 4runner but because of the aftermarket parts I scratch my head...?

The standard warranty for the Pro's are no different than for any other 4Runner. I've owned three 4Runners -- got the extended with my Limited but in my opinion it's wasted money due to them being quite reliable. The 4.0L six in the current models is tried and true.

You mean they all come with TRD Pro floor mats correct? Ours had carpet mats that said "TRD Pro" on them, but they were quickly replaced with weather tech.

Correct. On all other trim levels the mats can be deleted.

I don't know why people pay premium for a TRDPro when you can get so much more in a Trail Premium and have money left over to add any suspension you want.

You are the man!! I did as you said and bingo! Rattle gone over most bumps and only the worst of the worst bumps create a slight rattle or noise. I used 100mph tape for now and will try electrical tape soon just to see if its perfect. Very cost effective, lol! I will ask my service guy if there is something permanent that can be done the next time I take it in.Thanks again!

Even just one wrap of electrical tape did it for mine. I noticed the rattle the first day of ownership. Two days later couldn't take it anymore and installed the electrical tape. You learn how to do little things like this owning vintage GM vehicles. They ALL rattle but most can be cured with electrical tape, a wedge of paper or cardboard etc

So what does it cost in parts and labor to get a TEP upgraded to a TRD Pro?
I work too much and I don't have the time to do mods.

Tires, Wheels, Shocks, skid plate, front end grille, etc.

I do like the fact that the TRD Pro is completely under warranty.

You can definitely negotiate a better price on a TEP.

I would say low supply helps justify the premium paid for a TRD Pro?

Thats a good enough reason to buy one. The other reason is you can make a Trail LOOK like a Pro but its still not a pro

I am not doubting that there is potential to get what you paid for it. But I believe it is harder than you would think especially with yours not being one of the rare colors. But that is just me. I have watched a couple SW TRD Pros sit on craigs and ksl for quite awhile. Problem is they are trying to get what they paid or more. But like I said I could be wrong.
