4runner TRD Pro

This is just my personal opinion...but if I were to buy a TRD pro model, I would not touch a damn thing on it (except tires, if they end up coming with crapola dunlops, lol). Not only would you be messing with your resale value, you pretty much defeat the purpose of buying this special edition model if you're going to replace all the "special" parts on it with aftermarket ones.

Think long and hard about this, if you plan to tinker with it, just get a regular trail and mod to your hearts content :)

You are a wise man... :)

Hope to see a specific comparison soon online or in one of the magazines.

So there is my question--- Buy a Trail and modify it a little the way I want or buy the TRD Pro. If I buy the Pro and want to change things, will I be throwing away some of those expensive Pro parts? Will I downgrade the "package" by adding aftermarket parts that might work better on a Trail?

Example - I get the Pro, and want to add a few more inches of lift, bigger wheels and tires. How much of that Pro suspension stays, or am I replacing those expensive shocks and springs and actually lessening the capability? Am I replacing one lift kit with another (and paying twice)?

Is the Pro just a Trail with pretty paint and new shocks? Doesn't seem to be much out there directly comparing a Trail and Pro item to item (yet). Or is it genuinely a fourth, unique model?

So, I am leaning towards a Trail, add a little lift and quality parts (maybe TRD ala carte parts), and end up with my own "Pro" without the looks. But I do like the Pro looks...

You're on the right track OP. As others have said, if you have any inclination to modify, beyond tires and maybe rear springs, get a TE. And yes, the TRD Pro is essentially a TE with a skid-plate and better shocks/ springs.

Also, buying the TRD Pro for collector/ resale is kind of silly. If you go use it off road as it's intended, you'll be stressed out the entire time about ruining your pretty orange paint.

All good advice that seems to be going in the same direction. I do like the looks of the Pro a lot, but if the cost is really anything more than a few bucks, I would probably not see a good return, unless I am for sure not going to modify it. I also need to add in winter wheels and tires to my total cost, plus there always seems to be a little more mark up in Alaska on vehicles.

Resale would not be an issue. I have a '95 truck and a '89 car, so the dealers don't see me much.

Right now, unless the Pro has some great capability not available on the Trail (like time travel), I can't see paying for the nice suspension, and possibly throwing it out. I am eagerly awaiting some reviews when the magazines get their hands on the Pro, maybe just to re-assure that it isn't best for me, or that it is best unmodified and should stay that way. That's some weird logic...

Funny seeing this thread bumped up, I just got back from my visit at Toyota Headquarters over in Torrance, CA. I was out in cali last week and have some friends in the industry so they were able to get me inside for a tour of the place, it's friggin' HUGE!

Anyway, inside their testing faculties I saw then working on a bunch of these TRD pro models (mostly tundras and a few tacos though :(), BUT there was this one 4runner pro model sitting off to the side so naturally I asked about it. The engineer looked at me with a grin and told me to go take it for a spin on the test track, and well of course I gladly obliged!

So keeping in mind this is just a standard run of the mill test track meant for cars, and obviously I didn't plan to throw it around corners at high speeds and roll it over a few times, lol; so this drive was going to be pretty uneventful to say the least, or so I thought. I took it easy at first and just lightly tossed it around the turns...the new suspension does seem to feel pretty good all around and well planted and the exhaust also seemed to have a nice rumble to it, but I kept hearing what sounded like an over tightened timing belt whining as I got on and off the gas.

Finally, I made my way around the track and entered the long straight section back to the garage and figured while the heck not, so I braced myself for the eminent rush of a 16 second 1/4 mi drag strip monster and punched it :lmao:. This is when I stopped laughing...because the transmission downshifted and threw me back into my seat and in what amounts to practically a blink of an eye, I reached close to triple digit speeds!

At this point it finally hit me, that whining I heard before was the roots-type blower under the hood, you could hear it loud and clear as it roared towards redline! I don't know why it didn't occur to me earlier because I've driven plenty of supercharged cars and know that distinctive sound from a mile away.

So back in the facilities I of course asked questions at the rate of a million miles and hour :). Long story short is, I can't share any details due to a confidentiality agreement, but I can say that there's going to be a factory supercharged option on the way this fall (not sure about add-on kits)

Oh yeah, you can also check out this album of pictures I took while I was there and what it looks like under the hood of a real truck: TMS Headquarters Visit--March 28, 2014

eddie I think you've got a future as a writer...that was very creative. The detail for credibility, like the engineer's knowing grin, to feeling "embarrassed" you missed the super charger and should have recognized the sound, was a great touch.

Well played sir. :photo::clap2:

Wait! I'm reading this and it's April 2nd....... It must be true, SWEET.

I have accually toured the TX Toyota plant, and I know from experience, they don't show you the holly @&:$ stuff, just the pretty cool stuff. And they do NOT let you take pictures......EVER. Lol.

Thanks for the sweet story. Wish I had thought of it.

I am probably the only one thinking of this but what about a 3rd row option for the trd pro 4ru er!? Come on toyota, give the larger families some love. I know it is an option for the sr5/limited, but if the trail editions can't have it, can we have it as a special order option or something on the pro? Ill end my rant there... btw, I am a happy original owner of an 04 sport 4wd. I know toyota is reading this ;p
