4runner TRD Pro

I've been dealing with my local dealer on a TRD Pro 4Runner. They know about as much as we do unfortunately. He knows we want to buy one. We plan on leaving a deposit. Right now they are in contact with their Toyota Rep to try and get more info.

I'm kind of raising an eyebrow at Toyota for not releasing more info by now it supposedly going on sale in a few months. Price and official specs would be nice. That way dealers could start dealing with their customers appropriately.

but you have to remember that 99% of the 4runner buying public don't track/keep informed of this info like we do on this forum. which means the dealers are in the same pot as the general public pretty much.

and yes some dealers are the exception, but I can probably count them on 1 maybe 2 hands.

Well as luck would have it, I'm on assignment to photograph and write a story for this weekends New England Forest Rally. Low and behold a fellow media member works for Toyota of North America.

I reached out to them in regards to getting some more solid info on this rig and he's going to find out what he can on his side and let me know.

As long as he deems it ok, I will share it on here as well.

TRD Pro Spotted

I know everybody already knows what these look like, but while I was filling up this morning a Super White TRD Pro pulled up. I talked with the Toyota employee for a minute and asked to take some pics. He "thinks" it should be out sometime in October.

If I only had those wheels, I'd be set. Next on my list would be the front bumper/grill. I can handle suspension upgrades so that's no problem. Everything else I could care less about. Those floormats almost sell me though........

The reader response in that article are comical. There is a lot of hate out there for the 5th gen. I love mine.

I have a 2012 TE KDSS and the only thing I envy about the PRO are the wheels...and even those don't have the correct backspacing for an aggressive look that you would expect.

Yeah... Those tires.... If only we had known you could get better tires! Maybe trade in for a new TRD pro so you finally have new tires? Where do these guys come from?

Um, TRD Pro, off road special edition.... Come on Toyota, shouldn't this model come standard with rubber floor mats considering the terrain they are emphasizing this vehicle is best suited for?

Yeah, nothing like wet, muddy, mildew saturated floor mats to give the occupants that gag inducing reflex upon entering their $40K plus SUV. The bean counters in corporate are all celebrating their production cost savings. It's easier/cheaper to sew on a monogram to some existing inventory cloth floor mats than produce some rubber mats with the same insignia. I would have settled for plain rubber mats anyway, the badging on the floor mats are cheesy.

I got some interesting information this past weekend while talking with the TRD guys out at the FJ Summit in Ouray CO. Apparently, KDSS is not going to be available on the TRD Pro 4Runner. According to TRD the suspension the truck comes with works better without KDSS. By better they explained that it is made to suck up big bumps at speed and it does it better without KDSS. Again, this is straight from them not something that I conjectured and nothing that I can say is fact beyond my discussion with them.

Also, the black and white TRD Pro trucks will go into production early August and the inferno red will go into production late August. Pre-ordered white and black will more than likely show up on dealer lots around the first to middle of September. The inferno red pre-orders will more than likely show up on dealer lots near the end of September. Apparently they have seen a good number of pre-order for all colors.

They also had a 4Runner on site that was set up with the same suspension that sat much more level than any of the TRD Pro 4Runners I have seen up to this point. They indicated that this 4Runner was set up with the ride height front and rear that we can expect from the factory on the TRD Pro. It still sat taller than a factory Trail Edition but not as tall as the prototypes that most of us have seen pics of on the internet.

I put down a 3k deposit on a white one. Thier inventory manager said they "preferenced" one, and that it will turn into an order on august 7th or 8th. Since there is no concrete info on pricing or equipment, we created a set of parameters that if the truck falls outside of, the deal is off (msrp, standard equipment).

That is what I was told as well. I was willing to put down more than $500 and it was still a no go. I didn't feel like waiting though, so I ordered a TE. Seeing that white TRD pro makes me wish I could have waited. Unfortunately, my trade was acting up so I felt the need to dump it ASAP.

Just found this video...thought it was pretty good...put deposit down on white one already.....Converting from Jeep finally. Not easy to give up my v8 WJ JGC Overland, but wife's 2013 T4R Limited will be complemented nicely by my TRD Pro...both in white.

that seems really weird considering that most of the press shots depict a KDSS model. and that skid plate was clearly designed to accommodate a KDSS sway bar.
