This whole thing is crazy! There are arguments for each of the 4Runner models. KDSS or not, sunroof or not, limited or not....
I bought my TRDP because I liked the whole package. It is aesthetically pleasing to me. I do not think it is any better than any other 4Runner. If it had any mechanical ability or will I likely would have bought an SR5 and lifted it and done all the mods....
I HIGHLY doubt that they will make a V8 next year. What car do you know of that is going towards bigger, less efficient engines? BMW is changing to V6 twin turbos for god sake.
Due to the CAFE standards for fuel economy there is no way that the 4Runner or other SUV will go backwards in fuel economy.
And even if I am dead wrong- who cares.... If you buy cars or technology and think that you will have the greatest and best thing for more than a month you are wrong. I bought my rig because I like it NOW. And will like it for the next x+ years.

Speaking of trays and running boards, I am not sure what mine is showing up with and the dealer at this doesn't know either. In my region they apparently show up with a somewhat random set of options. This has also been confirmed with a few dealerships as well. That said, mine is schedule to land port side on 12/30 so I should have it parked in my garage sometime mid-Jan.
I did tell my sales guy that I would not purchase any type of running boards with the truck what so ever. If it shows up with some they had better take them off since I will be immediately install rock sliders. If they play hardball and force me to take them I am force them to allow me to pay cash for them and not finance the amount, even as small as it may be. That way I can turn around and sell them on Craigslist or here and not get shafted over the next 4 years with interest on the cost of the running boards/steps.
I am hoping that the truck does not show up with the sliding tray even as awesome as it is. I am just going to take it out and install some sort of sliding drawer system with an ARB fridge mounted on top of one of them. I have taken a good look at the sliding tray and as far as I am concerned it is a miracle of science! It just isn't going to suit my mods.

Nice review. I agree with most of it but I also, of course, happen to disagree on a few things but most of them due to the fact that a lot of this was subjective anyway AND that I own a TRD pro, which means I'm biased and I didn't see the cons the same way, right ?
For example: running boards.., first thing that gets destroyed when you actually off road .
Price: that's why I negotiated mine down below even the premium trail msrp price .
Theres a good grab bar on the a pillar .
Transmission.. Yes, but the Lexus Gx is also a butt load more money so I'm sure cost had everything to do with that, as it does every time. I would love a 6 speed though... Just not that price point product.
The engine does feel a bit underpowered to me, as it did when I had my tacoma (same basic engine) but kind of the power I expect out of this sort of SUV.
Two things I don't expect when I buy this type of truck.. Good MPG or good freeway horsepower. But it would be nice for sure.
Is it worth the extra price over the trail? Subjective.
The price of wheels suspension and to some extend exclusivity (or resale value if you prefer) is worth it to ... Everyone that bought one. I personally was going to buy a trail, but was going order it without kdds, slidding tray or sunroof (if possible) and upgrade the suspension... Then the TRD appeared AND it looked great.
Does this truck make sense over a trail? Only if it fits your needs. The reality is that if everyone here bought with just their checkbook we'd all have SR5 and do all the upgrades with aftermarket stuff and come out ahead... But some of us put value on the little things that manufacturer add from model to model. Plus these special models can offer a great resale value down the road, which off sets some of the initial price... If you actually paid that much more over the other models. If you didn't, then your that much more ahead right?
Thanks for the reply. It's nice to converse with someone who can agree to disagree rather than crap on your post. I definitely agree that it's all subjective. I really like the TRD Pro, but I think I'll hold out a little longer for a different engine/transmission option. However, if Toyota goes the crossover route then I'll be back to get me a TRD Pro for sure.
Yeah I am a short guy so the running boards are a necessity. However, like I said, I'd be replacing them with the N-Fab ones anyway. I see your point though about them getting destroyed. The tray would definitely be a plus for me. I hate reaching in the back to grab some of my gear or my Yeti when it's full.
Unfortunately, the dealer wouldn't budge on the price. They gave me some line about being the No. 1 dealer by volume in the area blah, blah, blah. I even bought a car from them last month and they wouldn't budge.
On a side note, the dealer had a white 4Runner on the show room also. At first I thought they had a white TRD Pro. However, it had a 3-inch lift, aftermarket wheels/tires, Rigid LEDs, no TRD Pro suspension, and no emblems. I asked the sales rep what it was and he told me it was a TRD Pro. I told him why it wasn't, and he said, "well the guy who's buying it doesn't know that." He said it was a Trail Edition with their version of the TRD Pro package. F-ing dealers.

If you have a VIN I can tell you everything about its whereabouts and add ons....I'm not sure if I can locate a vehicle by dealer but I'll try anything! lol
