4runner TRD Pro

I already have paint chipped off on my bumper just from resting a couple of 2x4's on it. When I asked the dealer about it, they said that was just what you get with the Super White and next time get a car with Blizzard Pearl (obviously not an option with the TRD Pro) as it has a clear coat and the Super White does not... hence the easy chipping.

I'm debating leaving it as is or taking it somewhere to get a clear coat

I haven't noticed my Super White paint being any worse than any other vehicle I have had over the past few years. It is certainly better than the 13 Camaro SS I had.

I have heard that the white is a single stage with no clear coat, and that it does have a clear coat so I'm not sure what to believe.

Picked up an excellent condition 1967 M416 Trailer in red.... was going to execute all these ideas to make an offroad trailer build but starting to fall in love with its vintage properties........... Will probably keep it "as is" for as long as possible....

yeah I just got a tepui tent and was very close to making it into a camper.... but Just couldn't pull the trigger, it loses value as soon as you cut into it (i.e. tail gate, matching tires, different axle etc), I also find these old trailers sooooo much better than the cookie cutter utility trailers they sell now-a-days, I can definitely see another 10 easy years with it .. tell your son to wave me down if he ever sees me driving around and say hi!... i should be the only inferno in the area...

Picked up my Super White last night

I must say I was concerned that it wouldn't drive any better or different than th '14 TE I traded in but I can tell the difference in handling and even a bit of acceleration. I like the way it drives even better than the '14 and I really liked that one.

The only problem with white or black is that you are never sure it is a Pro unless you get close enough to examine it-- so many people swapping the wheels and grill.

I don't see that as a "problem". I didn't buy the Pro so that when people see it they say "hey,..that's a TRD Pro 4Runner!". I just like it.

The Inferno color definitely works on the Pro, but, it's not for me.

When the dealership were "prepping" mine they left some light scratches on the clear coat that I could see in direct sunlight. Really bothered me -- went back and made them take $300 off the price I paid. Three days later I took it to a really good local detailer and had them do the CQuartz Finest paint coating. if you want to protect the paint really well for 3-5 years I'd recommend finding a place that does the CQuartz Finest and getting it done. Really makes a difference.

2 weeks in and already gave myself a huge scratch

pulling luggage out of the back of my white TRD PRO, i must have knocked a piece of luggage into the part of the bumper that is in between the top part (protected by a plastic guard) and the rear facing part of the bumper.

you guys know what what part of the bumper im talking about? where the rear bumper is painted the color of the body?

took the beast through trails and through the woods, and this is how i damage it.

man am i pissed off.

I touched it up with paint i got from the dealership, and i knew this would one day happen (getting the first scratch) but im fuming mad.

be careful pulling stuff out of the back of the truck (especially if you dont have that cargo tray...which i dont).

cant believe how easily it got scratched all the way down to the plastic.

I'm so mad im considering having it repainted.

I'm a visual designer by trade, which means I deal with pixel level perfection. I've never owned a new car till the 4Runner. And with as wild a color as Inferno it's hard not to be OCD about it.

But it's not a mall crawler and I know it'll get trail damage if I use it and actually take it out of the garage. Hell it'll get marks from just being around other cars.

It's hard NOT to baby this stuff but at the same time it deserves to be used.

My inferno is having the same sort of issues. Very disappointed in the quality of the paint job. When I go I for my 5,000 mile service I plan to ask the dealer to note my displeasure with the durability of the paint.

Just placed a deposit on an Inferno Pro set to arrive in July- feel pretty fortunate as delivery/production on these seems to be waning for 2015. Seems this thread has also died down a bit, but a few questions for those still around:

1. Is Toyota still trimming the front bumpers on these? Still surprised how something so simple could pass into production.

2. Anyone add OEM keyless entry/push start? Read through a few threads, but nothing definitive for the 5th gen 4R.

That is exactly the area where my paint chipping occurred. I have a feeling that area of the truck will see a lot more damage. Especially when loading and unloading the cargo area.

The corner of the door TOUCHED her civic and white paint rubbed off down to the plastic of the molding on my door. not a huge deal as one tiny dab of touch up covered it up, but is this an idication that the paint isnt durable?

If it chips/scrapes off this easily this is bad news and is going to seriously annoy the hell outta me.

It's clearcoated.
All paint chips and thickness is not the reason. The reason modern paint chips is we (all of us) have elected people that want to save the world and solvent based paint cannot be used. Water based paint is not as durable.
It chips. It scratches. Be prepared to be annoyed. Send a letter to Toyota.

Not really. You could put the plastic on the front like some do. You could put a bug shield on it to protect the leading edge of the hood. Nothing you do though is going to stop that small stone kicked up by the truck in front of you from scratching or denting the paint. Door dings and chips happen even to the best paint jobs on the planet. If you don't want anything to happen then the best thing to do is garage it and never drive it.

As far as this being a collector's item? I have read this statement and sure, maybe it will be but not for 40-50 years. A Datsun 240Z from the early 70's (even the rare models in mint condition) can be picked up for around 30K. That's 45 years old! The Lamborghini LM002 SUV is rare. There were 321 sold in the US. It cost $120K new. A perfect 1982 example with only 5K miles sold for $170K. The vehicle is 33 years old!

Yes, it's badass looking now. There will soon be "the next big thing" though that will make our 4Runners look old and dated. Every now and then a vehicle is produced that will transcend time and still be beautiful 50 years from now. A Thunderbird, a Corvette Stingray or a Ferrari 250. Is the 4Runner TRD Pro one? I doubt it but we'll see.

I know there will be a 2016 TRD Pro. There will be two new colors and the Inferno will be temporarily retired. FJ Cruisers did the same with the Trail Teams versions.

Personally I just drive mine knowing it is going to get scratched, dinged and dirty. To me it adds character, sort of like a scar but I have had many new vehicles. I understand your frustration but a vehicle is not made to look perfect for a long time. Any vehicle. Could they give it a coating that wouldn't scratch or chip? Sure they could but do you want to pay $50K for that coating? Nobody else does either.

Unfortunately, I agree with everything said here, and it's the main reason I hate new cars (trucks).

The only thing I can add is that I just saw a Ford GT-40 go at auction for a cool quarter million. Still a good looking rig after all these years!

New cars are great, but it's meant to be drive. Protect your car as best you can but also go drive it.
