4runner TRD Pro

I've noticed the paint chips really easily on my truck but no issues to clear bubbling or anything like that. If the sap is penetrating the clear tho you are going to want to have that fixed sooner than later to avoid potential rust problems. Might be able to get Toyota to reshoot the truck with a more durable clear or something

I appreciate the info. I am suppose to drop it off at the dealer body shop to have them first try and wet-sand the hood and see if it hasn't made it through the clearcoat. The vehicle usually stays in the garage but I did have it parked daily in the driveway for a few months because my Tacoma was on jack stands with the front suspension removed; it blocked me from entering the garage. I still would wash my 4Runner often. Reshooting the clear on the truck may be an option. Thanks!

The exhaust smell is normal and its from negative pressure created at the rear of the vehicle pulling in the fumes under acceleration through the rear window. If you are smelling it with all windows up I would say that's not the norm. The fix is to route the exhaust out the side, not the rear. If you abuse the truck off road you will find the exhaust out the back also gets smashed pretty fast so its a win win in most peoples book to re route it.

On the paint issue, I think that's all you. No idea what the composition of the sap is, how long it sat on the paint etc etc but I doubt Toyota will help you out with that one. Maybe try to keep a solid protective coating on it.

The exhaust smell is heavy in the cab even with all the windows rolled up. I am not sure how it is getting into the cab but you can definitely get overwhelmed by it. I might have to take it to another dealership to have them investigate the issue. Thanks

If you add up the cost of the Pro parts, tax and labor and add that to the MSRP for the TEP (-KDSS) it's a wash. You can most likely get the TEP for less than MSRP up front which does add a bit of savings, but if you sell a TEP w/ pro parts 1,2,3 years later it most likely will not bring the same price as an actual TRD Pro, so once again you are at a wash (except for the moonroof and KDSS if those are important, at which point you should get the TEP/TRD Off Road Premium w/ those options).

This is all based on looking at internet prices, local prices, parts cost, labor cost, taxes, new 4runner MSRP, used 4runner selling prices, etc.
I did all this math for a TEP I was looking at, selling for $2k less that MSRP and I came up with an upfront savings of approximately $1k plus I got a sunroof I could care less about. Looking at vehicles for sale online on this site, other forums, ebay, carguru's, cars.com, craiglist, etc I came to realize that modded TEP's sold for close to what non-modded TEP's sold for, as mod's don't necessarily increase resale prices (this happens in the motorcycle world all the time). Where as TRD Pro's have had asking/selling prices above their original MSRP for the last 2 years.

Best advice I've seen for people who are going into this counting each dollar is, if you don't plan on doing any of your own mods, don't have access to tools and garage to do your own mods or want one of the special colors, then buy a TRD Pro. You aren't going to lose any $$, that's for sure.
If on the other hand you want to do your own mod's (especially those that are above and beyond what the Pro offers), have access to tools and garage so you don't have to pay labor cost, like the colors that the TEP/TRD Off Road Premium come in, have all the time available to do said mod's and don't mind selling w/o getting the return on investment for your mods (if and when you sell), then buy the TEP (or whatever version you like).

I think what people forget sometimes is people buy based off of what they want, not what makes sense on paper (unless what makes sense on paper is what you want, which goes back to my point of, people buy what they want!)

I think this is what you were implying OP, that the cost is not that different and people should just buy what they want. :amen:

Great info thanks.

Yes I could buy a 2016 TEP with KDSS at invoice(Edmonds,NADA,Kelly Blue book) but I just chose to order the TRD Pro because I do want those TRD Pro upgrades.
I just don't have the time and tools but working so much allows for the cash to pay for a Pro and not kill my budget.

I test drove the KDSS and it was NICE! I was tempted to just buy the TEP with KDSS but I chose to spend more money and wait.

So for anyone with a TRD Pro. How is this vehicle for daily driving? All the reviews I have watched say its pretty good on pavement?

My 2016 Jeep Rubicon is fun to drive but really sucks for the most part on pavement. Obviously the Rubicon is purely designed for off-road use.

It's not like the TRD Pro 4Runner is some sort of super-modified rock crawling monster. It is going to drive very similar to the TEP you test drove.

There not that much of a difference. If you had an early 2015-16 you may have noticed an annoying clunk below 30 degrees in the TRDP.

Maybe it has been addressed before but I'm curious why there would be a "clunk" below 30 degrees? What causes this clunk? Anything to be concerned about? I joined the forum to research 4R's especially TEP's/TRDP's as much as I so that by this coming year when I have the means, I can make the proper purchase of a used vehicle. Capability I'm pretty up to snuff. Now I'm searching for all the issues/fixes I can find. TRDPRO

It was a common problem and TMC has issued a Fix. This is for 2015's and some of the early 2016's. Billstien created a new front strut that ends in ...150 that is the replacement for owners that have the problem. If you are buying new, there should be no issue. There is an entire thread dedicated to the clunk.

As far as road manners, without a sway bar it bobs around like a boat on the ocean. lol. I don't mind because it is a truck and is designed for driving off road, which is why I bought it. Overall though it is comfortable, handles well and is responsive.

Fortunately I do not have the clunk. Mine was built in October of 15 and I got it in December. I'm in NY and it has been below freezing for some time and no issues.

Having read this forum before making a decision as to what trim to buy I was aware that buying a Trail and building it was an option. Like others have said, at the time I did not have the resources or knowledge, or the motivation at my age, to want to get into doing the mechanical work. I bought the pro because it was offroad ready out of the box. Now that I have learned from the many threads here that impressive improvements are doable myself, I look at it this way: buying the Pro gets me into the backcountry right away and the 3 year warranty buys me time to research what upgrades I would like to do down the road and learn from others trial and errors. It also gives me time to save for parts and tools.

For me it's a win, win. I love it.

All I'm wishing for now is the bolt on gizmo that's going to give it 50 mpg.

i ordered a 2017 TRD Pro in cement yesterday, but I am swaying back and forward on the options i went with. I decided against the roof rack crossbars and running boards as I want to get aftermarket ones, and also didn't go with the remote start as I have read that its not very good. I did go with the rear deck sliding cargo tray, but again not sure if this is needed. People with the deck are you glad you got it, and people without do you wish you had got it?

Congrats on the new ride! Did you discuss any pricing on the truck.....most of the dealers in my area are showing inbound units, but have no firm pricing.

While I was looking at 5th gens in person I found a couple with the sliding rear cargo deck - and I thought it was a pretty neat feature. After having mine for awhile without the sliding rear deck I really don't miss not having it. So I really think it's 50/50 - for guys that do go with it I'm sure it'll get used. That being said I'm moving towards a drawer setup in the rear so that move ended up saving me money in the long run.

Honestly that's the only option I'd consider for prospective owners. Mine also had the rigid running boards which I honestly like - as they don't look like they belong on a 97 Ford Explorer like some of the other variants, but if you are going straight to a set of sliders it's a moot point.

Apparently GSD can't remove that item, but I'm not getting anything else. Need to find some sliders that sort of double as steps for 7 and 5 year old, but that's it for now.

I like my sliding cargo tray, which again, I did not order but it was built that way for my region. My Pro fits in my garage, but by razor thin margins, so I don't care about a remote start. Don't sweat the smaller stuff that can be added later.
