4runner TRD Pro

TRDpro versus TRD Offroad Premium

OK, I almost am to the point of ordering and had convinced myself to to get the ORP due to KDSS.

I get the differences in looks, as well as coils and shocks, but suspension-wise, can someone tell me is there a practical disadvantage of the ride or handling of the TRDpro versus the KDSS equipped 4runners IF a person is mostly going to do hwy driving? If I were in my 20s it wouldn't be a question - I have owned 6 Toyota 4x4s in the past. But HWY ride and handling as a daily driver mean a bit more to me now. LOVE the looks of the TRDpro.

Last November I decided I wanted a 4Runner. I loved the look of the TRDP, but loved the idea of KDSS even more. It seemed like the best thing since sliced bread on a BOF truck and I wanted it.

After hunting around for a week or so I found a dealer not to far away that had TEP's with and w/o KDSS. I called and made arrangements to go drive both, explaining to the salesman I was trying to decide between the 2 versions of TEP. When I got to the dealer I learned that both vehciles were silver Trail Edition Premiums with the only difference being that one had KDSS and one did not. I told the salesmen not to tell me which one was which and I didn't look underneath the truck or at the sticker, just hopped in, started them up and drove off.

Now, I didn't drive them for an hour on and off road, just about 15 minutes each, on town roads and the highway. At the end of the rides I had to ask which was which because I couldn't tell them apart:noidea:
I asked the salesman if I could drive them again, which he agreed to, though he said he couldn't tell them apart when driving them either. I drove them again and came to the same conclusion; they both had the same amount of body roll and brake dive during normal street driving despite my exaggerated steering inputs. I'm sure there are instances where you would feel the difference, but for everyday driving I didn't feel a $2k difference.

When I looked at my TRDP I asked to take it for a ride, mainly because I had never driven one before, but also to give myself the opportunity to think rationally about the purchase. Even though it had been 2 months since my previous test drives I could tell right away that the suspension was more planted and I experienced less body roll and brake dive than with the 2 versions of the TEP. I shared my story with the salesman about the early test drives as they took place in a different state at a different dealer, and he commented that it was tough to tell the difference between KDSS and non-KDSS during everyday driving.

I've had my TRDP for about 2 months now and have driven it on a 5 hour highway trip already and I'll say it's road manners are great! It's very comfortable, quiet and handles the miles perfectly! For me, it was the right choice and I'm glad I had the opportunity to drive the TEP's (now TRD ORP's) as I now know w/o a doubt that I made the right choice with my purchase:reddance:

I can't find any TRPro without the cargo slider which I definitely don't want. Can these be converted to be like the ones without this option?
I don't think you can remove it. Mine didn't come with it and I didn't want it. But I am short and I can see where this would actually be useful. I have the weather mat in the back and when you slide things forward you have to really reach and it hangs up on the mat. You might grow to love it.

Thanks - glad to hear that they actually made some TRDpro without it. I definitely don't want it. Out of every single one I have found zero don't have it.

Thanks for the feedback. Now if I can only find one without the stupid (IMO and for my uses) cargo tray.

Maybe it is regional? Depending on how far you want to go, try a different area from where you are? Hopefully you'll find the one you are looking for.

Tray is definitely regional. Gulf states for sure have to get it, no option. Whatever region Iowa is in does not have to get it. Same with Tennessee.

Great help. Thanks for taking the time to do this write up. Making my wait more unbearable. My TRDP was processed at the port today. Should be arriving next week sometime.

It is an easy delete, there is even a thread around here to do it. ;): :)

Mine has it. Two things I don't like about it are...

1. It doesn't automatically adjust the AC or Heater based on outside conditions. You must set that before leaving the vehicle.

2. When you unlock the Truck it turns off so you then have to start it when you get in.

I noticed the shutoff part u said on my wifes 17. My quicksand 16 i have aftermarket starter and when i open the door i just have to put the key in and turn it without fully starting it. But if i touch brake without putting key in, it shuts off

You haven't mentioned where you are and how far you are willing to go, but Toyota of Olympia in Washington is still showing on cars.com a white trdpro today. If you want white, they might be an option. This is day 3 for the listing.

A lot of the trd's on cars.com are orders and are aready sold before they even hit cars.com

You go get them Faded_MrKrabs. You're the coolest cat in Denver with your new CEMENT PRO TRD!!! Glad you skipped out on that diesel powered GC. You put that trump bumper sticker on yet?

Cement Gray TRD Pro coming without sliding tray, and I would like the tray

So,

I have a Cement Gray TRD Pro coming in early May (was built this week) and it does not have the sliding tray (got lucky that a dealer had a cement one unclaimed).

I actually WANT the sliding cargo tray so...

1. I would be willing to trade the various parts to swap your tray into mine, and get my stuff into yours (I am in Michigan)

2. My truck is arriving in mid-april. Toyota can do a "A" trade in the system. If YOU happen to have a cement gray one on the way and you have the tray and don't want it - Dealers can trade them in the system so when they are shiped from portland the dealer gets the other unit. I want cement gray with a sliding tray, (but not much else) and it's coming to me sometime in May. IF I need to wait a week or two I would love to coordinate a "Swap" with yours if you dont' want the tray. It's about a 2 minute deal for dealers.

Just a thought.

Cement at local dealer in Southern California.
$60,000
I'm sure there is some sucker willing to pay $16,000 over MSRP

Thanks for the thought but I may have found one already. I was trying to avoid ordering as I ordered my last truck, waited until it got in, then didn't like it and bought one off the lot...yeah, I know.

Just wondering, if any of you got a case for all your manuals? On the window sticker it does say "preferred owners portfolio" but I got my documents/manuals in a Manila folder :confused:

My 16 has one and my wifes 17 doesnt. I actually prefer not to have it.
