4Runner - Tundra Interchangeability Questions

I recently rolled my 2002 4X4 4runner.:cry2: 4Runner saved my a$$. No injuries, which is some sort of miracle. Amazingly, 4Runner is still mechanically fine (even the dangling power mirrors I broke off still work). Unfortunately, there's a lot of glass that can't be replaced due to bends in window frames and roof. I had just put a new set of OME nitros in the rear and I have pretty new DuraTracs (LT285/75R16) on 16" "flower" wheels.

I have a chance to buy a 2003 4X2 V6 Std Tundra with a new frame as a replacement for my 4Runner. Same motor as my 4Runner and the Std shift avoids the pink milkshake problem. I did the Tundra brake swap on my 4Runner so I know some stuff that swaps Tundra --> 4Runner. Wondering if my 4Runner OME shocks (front and rear) will swap. Also wondering if the wheels and tires will swap.

I know this isn't a Tundra forum but if any of you guys have any ideas I'd appreciate some feedback. Even if it's just to point me to a good Tundra forum.

Front suspension components should swap over, not sure about the rear, wheels and tires should also swap. Could probably use the 4Runner parts to do a 4x4 swap, I’m pretty sure the front diff is the same and the transfer case should bolt up to your transmission

Rear shocks will be too short and stiff for the Tundra.

4x4 swap will need longer Tundra axles, but otherwise might be an interesting project... The transfer case probably isn't a direct bolt-on either (Tundras were electric shifted with no holes in the floor normally, I believe - might work better with a manual Tundra though)

I think you’re right about the the electronic shift but from a quick google search it looks like manual tcase swaps on tundras are a thing and probably not that hard. A J shift tcase should be really cheap from a junkyard or part out. The knuckles are the same between the tundra and 4Runner so you could swap those over too

I assume the op is in a rust state based on the tundra having a new frame so that’s a big plus, I say get the tundra if it’s a decent deal

4runner front shocks are shorter than tundra shocks and a different tophat. 4Runner rear shocks are shorter/stiffer and also have a different bushing at the axle. Wheels and tires will swap over.

The front shocks and coils are interchangeable, but the top hat will need to be swapped out for the tundra. The top hats are different from 4runner and tundra/sequoia. Front tundra calipers are interchangeable as well. If the tundra is a 2wd, you might have the 199mm smaller calipers on there. The 231mm is the ones came in the TRD and LIMITED packages. Rear shocks are lower on the 4runner and taller on the tundra. Unfortunately your rear 3rd member cannot bolt to your tundra axle being that its bigger on the tundra.

Personally I would cab swap that 4runner if you did a lot of work to it. Good luck with your decision.
