4runner vs Explorer

OP,
My sig has a pic of my 5000# Nautique hitched to my 04 Sport V8. Not much sag. My runner tows it with no problem.

I would venture to say that if you buy a 4runner you will wonder why you ever drove an Explorer.

I'm going to look at a 2006 v8 sport this weekend. Any possible issues with the year that I should keep an eye out for?

Frozen break calipers, timing belt, cracked exhaust manifolds, and rust. And with every other car, accident and service history.

Happy buying!

You know since you seem kind of caught up on the bells and whistles of the Explorer Limited I think you should consider the 4Runner Limited

I came from an LTZ Silverado and an Audi and you eventually forget all those gadgets. I mean of course I want another luxury car but what the 4Runner lacks in style it makes up for with fit and finish and utility.

The only thing I regret is that the T4R is so popular and now I literally see 3 or 4 other 4Runners at every stop light.

and typically 100% factory.

Im actually very happy with the bells and whistles in my 03 Limited.

As am I, I wrote off modern Toyota trucks for so long and thought the only good ones were from the 80's I never knew what I was missing.

as you know, ive mainly stayed with GM but with this one its different. Im incredibly impressed with Toyota. My friends and family thought it was brand new when i got it, not 10 years old. Ill be with toyota for awhile now.

I do wish it had a little more headroom but other than that i love it.

So the 06 sport sold. Now there is a 2008 v8 4x4 sr5 with a moonroof 70k miles for sale at a dealer near me. It's a CPO, and their lowest price they're quoting me is 22k plus tax document fee. It's more than I want to spend, and I'm worried it'll drop in price significantly in a year. Am I right or is it a good deal? The CPO warranty will be gone in a year and the powertrain warranty will be gone in under two years. Then it'll just be a sr5 with 100k miles and no warranty.

03's and 04's with 100,000 miles are still selling for $12-15,000 depending on trim levels and engine/drivetrain options in my area. I feel like the market is a little high here but 4Runners don't seem to lose much value.

I feel that is a little high on price. I bet they have about $16k into that runner. Sometimes cars are worth overpaying a little bit but ill tell ya they are far and few between. They have to be clean clean clean includin window sticker from when it was new original perfect everything with a perfect maintenance history including receipts. Low mileage 2001-2004 1st gen Tacomas and 2000-2002 3ed gen 4runners hold their value like no other car. Nobody including Toyota builds trucks like those anymore. Everything now days is cheap and fugly.

Loosing a boat load of $$$ in whatever you buy? You won't on a Toyota (unless you over pay or beat on your ride) as they hold their value very well. I paid 19k (otd from a dealer) for my v6 sr6 4x4 with 55k miles in Jan 2011. I now have 80k and I bet I can get $17k for it ($500 more than its nada value). That's not to bad on a 7 year old truck with 80k miles. As long as you make a well thoughtful choice you won't loose lots of $$$ over the years as your runner gets older.

Yeah I was guessing that they have closer to 18k in it, including certification. The dealer was trying to tell me that the rough trade in was 20k and they had 1.5k in CPO certification. My bs alarm went off in my head when he claimed trade in was at least 20k and I walked away. Hopefully another v8 4x4 4runner pops up for sale nearby before my rental coverage runs out. Having to buy a car with a time constraint sucks.

Again, thanks for all the advice.

My mom has a Lincoln Aviator with AWD, basically the nice Explorer. Its in the shop for little things all the time even though we completely baby it next to my two 4Runners. It's had two trannys and my mom only drives the thing to the grocery store! I would NOT feel comfortable taking that thing anywhere off road.

Stick with Japanese!!

Stay away from those explorers if you can. I talked to two different mechanic friends and they both said that the explorers become disposable vehicles at about 100k.

I ended up with a 2006 4runner limited. Does anyone know where I can get the factory lighted running boards? Mine didn't come with them.

In case anyone else searches for the same question, 2002 explorer v8 vs 2006 4runner v8.

The seats are more comfortable, the transmission shifts a lot smoother, the engine is quieter, the side mirrors are great sized, the headlights are better, the 115v ac plug is nice, the shelf is nice and it turns better on city streets. I think the explorer drives/rides nicer on the highway, and it also had more room inside. I might bump this later with a towing and fuel economy comparison.

I knew you'd end up with the Limited model! And you can't compare ride quality between SRA and IRS.
this one actually ended up being cheaper and in nicer condition than the sport or the sr5 that I was looking at. Plus it was at carmax, who's usually overpriced.

For a SRA SUV, the 4runner definitely rides nice. The durango and trailblazer both ride significantly worse than either the explorer or the 4runner. I'd say its comparable in ride to the pathfinder. If it rode like the durango or the trailblazer, then I don't think I would have bought it.
